Six of the San Benito Greyhounds’ victories this season during non-district play came in the past two weeks as the players were off during the extended holiday break.

Those victories came against the La Feria Lions, 59-52, in December, and against the Valley View Tigers, 86-34, a couple of days after the New Year.

In between, the ‘Hounds lost to Jubilee Brownsville, 76-66.

SBHS is 6-13 in non-district play. They have two more non-district games against Edinburg and at La Joya (Jan. 9).

They will open their District 32-6A schedule at home against the Harlingen Cardinals on Jan. 23.

So far, the Los Fresnos Falcons (18-5), the Brownsville Hanna Eagles (19-6), and Harlingen (19-7) have fared well during non-district play.

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers have five wins in 19 non-district games.

Basketball matters will be more urgent now that District 32-6A play will commence for the San Benito Lady Greyhounds on Friday in Brownsville.

They take on the Hanna Lady Eagles, who enter the game with a 6-18 record.

The Lady ‘Hounds have played sparingly since December 19, when they lost to the PSJA Lady Bears by five points.

They participated in the Tuloso-Midway Tournament late last month, playing against teams they would not have normally scheduled.

SBHS was matched against the Industrial Lady Cobras (lost 41-28) and the Poth Lady Pirates (lost 53-36).

The Harlingen Lady Cardinals are the only district team with a convincing winning record in non-district play. They are 14-9.

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons (13-11) and Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers (13-12) have season records just above even.
