TXDoT closes bridge

RIO HONDO, TEXAS —Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDoT) announced on Saturday that the famed Rio Hondo Lift Bridge will remain closed to vehicle traffic until further notice after being struck during an accident involving a motor vehicle.

The announcement came on the heels of the vehicular crash on Saturday that damaged the junction box that provides power to the bridge, reads a statement from TXDoT Pharr District Public Information Officer Ray Pedraza, citing the March 22 incident.

As a result, FM 106 is currently closed at FM 106 and FM 1846 for westbound traffic and at FM 106 and FM 508 for eastbound traffic.

TxDOT will continue to update this closure and repairs on its social media platforms and via local media outlets, stated Pedraza.

“That is crazy; trying to head out of there from Harlingen, but I guess it would be a long drive since the bridge is closed,” wrote Manuel Perez on Facebook once learning of the closure.

The closure also annoyed a number of residents and commuters, who endured an extended closure relatively recently as the bridge was refurbished by the state, promoting resident Eliza Wells to comment, “Not again! How long do we have to wait? It’s a long wait to get it fixed, I guess.”

The closure is also affecting the upcoming Resaca City Bike Tour slated for April 5, 2025. In anticipation of its continued closure, San Benito Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee Chair Toni Crane said that organizers are looking to reroute a portion of the bicycle tour.
