The San Benito Greyhound Varsity Basketball Team earned an important victory last week against the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers, but San Benito was unable to flip that victory into a winning streak after losing at home to the Harlingen Cardinals on Tuesday.

The loss prevents San Benito from being last in District 32-6A with two games remaining in the season. Only the top four teams qualify for the Class 6A playoffs.

Before the start of the Harlingen game, San Benito Head Basketball Coach Luis Garza said his players were continuing to play hard, adding that the Greyhounds were excited about the earlier victory and looked forward to more wins despite being in a competitive district.

San Benito points have been hard to come by as their opponents continue to utilize full-court pressure defensively.

It worked like a charm when the Greyhounds did it as their 33-32 road win against Veterans showed. The Chargers only scored three points in the opening quarter to San Benito’s 13. The Greyhounds were humbled in return as the double-digit lead shrunk.

Then they scored only five, six, and nine points in the remaining quarters. But it was enough to get revenge on a Veterans’ team that had previously beaten them at home, 56-47.

Against the Cardinals, despite San Benito senior Devan Ullueva opening the game with a basket just seconds in, it was difficult finding the net the rest of the quarter. He scored again, but it amounted to six first quarter points. Harlingen led 31-12 at halftime, and eventually won, 69-39.

District leader Los Fresnos has a 6-1 record, followed by Harlingen (5-2), Brownsville Hanna (3-3), and Veterans (1-5).

San Benito’s remaining games are Hanna at home on Friday, and Los Fresnos next Tuesday away.
The Veterans need to lose one or both of their next two games against Harlingen and/or Hanna for San Benito to have an opportunity to qualify for the playoffs.
