The City of San Benito recently unveiled a new sign reading, “I love San Benito” with a stylized heart in place of the word “love.” The announcement was met with a mixed reception by citizens.

The sign was installed along the Resaca Trail in Heavin Memorial Park, giving visitors a “perfect spot for a photo opportunity,” read a post by City officials on the City of San Benito’s Facebook page.

While much of the public reaction to the sign has been positive, there have been critics who have voiced their displeasure online.

“This is a publicity stunt because of all the negativity city leaders have had as of late,” said Facebook user Bruce Clark.

Others expressed frustration with the City’s apparent priorities with the projects it takes on.

“The play areas for kids at the park are rusty and dangerous, street dogs run free, potholes and poorly maintained sidewalks, they canceled fireworks, and the Christmas lights are depressing. Who approved a budget for this eyesore?” said Rosario Moses.

Other commenters expressed a more positive opinion of the sign.

“Nice surprise! Love it!” said Rosalina G. Garcia.

“I love it! [A] Great addition to the trail!” said Sylvia H. Garcia.

San Benito Director of Public Relations, Cristina Garcia said the sign totalled $5,400 and features a concrete base with steel construction, and is made of metal materials. The City Commission approved the installment in Sept. 2022.

Garcia added that the monument serves as both a photo opportunity and a symbol of community love.

Shortly after the initial post, the City announced they had ordered “over $400,000” of new street paving equipment for street projects. The announcement added that City crews are handling the street repairs to save costs on the projects and that the tax revenue will be used to “speed up” repairs and maintenance.

The City continued to show an effort in public works projects and posted progress images of the work happening in the Ballenger Street area. This consists of replacing the old clay sewage pipes with new piping.

The NEWS attempted to contact the City of San Benito for more information about the sign, but no response was received has of newspaper deadline Thursday morning.
