The district portion of the San Benito Lady Greyhounds’ schedule is finally here and after two games, the team has an even record.
The Lady ‘Hounds defeated Brownsville Hanna in the District 32-6A opener at home by a 59-19 tally. However, at Los Fresnos this week, San Benito lost by a slim 50-47 margin.
When the Lady ’Hounds were still competing in their pre-district schedule, Coach Abel Moreno noted the importance of the eight district games, adding how difficult it would be for the Lady ‘Hounds to advance to the postseason if they fall again.
“The girls know every single of the eight district games will be important where we will land in the playoffs. Knowing we will probably be in the big school division changes our perception of the schedule,” Moreno said. “Every game becomes even more important.”
San Benito’s remaining district schedule is as follows: Jan. 14 hosts Brownsville Veterans Memorial, Jan. 17 at Harlingen, Jan. 21 at Brownsville Hanna, Jan. 24 hosts Los Fresnos, Jan. 31 at Brownsville Veterans Memorial, Feb. 4 hosts Harlingen.
“Our first goal is to make a run for the district title, something we have worked on in this program since our last title in 2018,” Moreno said. “After that, our second goal is to break the area game, a game we’ve played five times in the last 10 years with no success. Our goal is to keep expanding the legacy and success of girls’ basketball, so hopefully we are working closer to that.”
In the Hanna game, San Benito had a shutout after a quarter, and was winning at halftime, 35-5.
Seniors Valerie Vela (12 points) and Kayla Rodriguez (11 points) led San Benito in scoring. Five players scored three pointers, including sophomore Hailey Davila, junior Madilyn Garcia, senior Jade Maya, freshman Kalista Olivares, and senior Kayla Rodriguez.
The Lady ‘Hounds are 19-9 on the season.
The San Benito Greyhounds, meanwhile, ended last year and began 2025 playing away from their home gym.
They defeated Jubilee Brownsville, 46-43 in a game played Dec. 27. They won despite trailing in the final quarter.
This week on Jan. 4, they went to Pharr Valley View and were victorious, 55-47. The ’Hounds only allowed their foe five first quarter points to pave their way towards victory.
San Benito’s overall record is 7-8.
