The Greyhound Showdown recently finished its second year in San Benito, taking place on Dec. 7 at the Sonny Brazil AG Complex located at the San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy grounds.
The event allowed students to show and monitor the animals they raised during the school year in preparation for the Cameron County, and Rio Grande Valley livestock shows and possibly beyond. These students brought forth their hogs, lambs, goats and more, according to organizers.
“It was a lot of work, but we have a good team,” said Bobby Leal, one of the organizers behind the event.
Leal and Melinda Garza, another event organizer, are a part of the Future Farmers of America [FFA]. The event faced difficult weather, but pushed onwards and saw a “good turnout,” according to Leal. The stock show saw judges from various Texas cities, including El Campo, Boling and Eloy.
The Sonny Brazil Booster Club presented the event. The club is a parent organization that works to support the students in the FFA through fundraisers. Previously, they were able to give last year’s graduating seniors opals and distributed $4,000 worth of scholarships to eight seniors. Members of the FFA also received special jackets and other memorabilia.
“It’s a great club, and we’re doing great things here in San Benito. We encourage more students to join,” said Leal.
The Booster Club plans on participating in the “Sunny Brazil Classic” in late January. According to Leal, the show is primarily managed by the FFA students and staff. The Brazil Classic serves a similar purpose to the Greyhound Showdown, in which participants use the event to prepare for upcoming livestock shows.
Meanwhile, the Showdown is set to return in 2025. For more information on the booster club, visit their official Facebook page.
