Against the Roma Lady Gladiators at home last week, it took just 10 seconds for the San Benito Lady Greyhound Varsity Basketball Team to score off a Kalista Olivares trey, and take a lead they would never surrender throughout the game.

San Benito had a double figure lead before Roma would even score to totally dominate in a 56-18 victory.
San Benito had a combined 28 rebounds, 13 steals, and five blocks in the game, but the field goal percentage was 37 percent. The Lady ‘Hounds’ three-point percentage was better than 47 percent, and their free throw percentage was 67 percent. Roma didn’t shoot any free throws.

Then San Benito followed that performance up by defeating the Hidalgo Lady Pirates, 51-25, in an away game. The leading San Benito scorers were Angelina Reyes with 18 points and Jade Maya, who added 10 points. Oneida Ojeda had eight points.

The team went 4-of-17 in three-point attempts against Hidalgo.

Following the two wins, San Benito improved to 15-7 this season.

“We have made some lineup changes that have helped us in different aspects of the game,” San Benito Coach Abel Moreno said. “The girls have worked the last two weeks to improve our defense.”

The Lady Greyhounds played away at Weslaco (Dec. 10) and next week is at Edinburg North (Dec. 13). They have two more December games before they begin district play next month.

“We feel, with the changes, the next few games before district will provide us the necessary preparation to gear up and fix the necessary things to make a district run,” Moreno said.

Meanwhile, the Greyhound Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team lost to the Weslaco Panthers, 60-45, in their latest contest. They did score in double figures in each quarter, but the Weslaco offense was too much to handle. The Panthers shot 52 percent from the floor, and made half of their 20 attempts from the three-point line.

San Benito dropped to 4-7 on the year. The ‘Hounds played at La Feria Dec. 10, and next week is at Hidalgo (Dec. 17). Their last game this month is after Christmas Day on Dec. 27 at Jubilee Brownsville.
