Authorities apprehended a man accused of indecency with a child after investigators appealed to the public for information leading to his whereabouts and subsequent arrest.
As reported last week in the NEWS, law enforcement authorities were seeking information leading to the whereabouts and apprehension of Armando Alvarado after investigators collected what Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza described as enough evidence to support allegations brought against the suspect by a minor.
According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), on Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence in San Benito regarding a past Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child.
Upon arrival, the responding deputy made contact with the complainant who stated that her daughter had made an allegation of sexual assault against the suspect, Alvarado (55), leading to a Cameron County Sheriff’s Investigators collecting enough evidence to support the allegations brought against the suspect, reads a CCSO report.
The investigator assigned to the case was able to secure the warrants for Alvarado for TPC: 22.021, Aggravated Sexual Assault of Child, TPC: 21.11, Indecency with a Child, TPC: 21.02, Continuous Sexual Abuse of Young Child or Children, and TPC: 33.021, Online Solicitation of a Minor.
Investigators then learned the suspect had allegedly fled to Mexico, according to the sheriff’s office, and turned to the public for any information on Alvarado’s whereabouts.
Cameron County Crime Stoppers received an anonymous tip suggesting Alvarado was in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Since Monday, July 29, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff Investigators were negotiating the time and place of his surrender, said Garza.
Then, on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, Alvarado agreed to turn himself into Cameron County Sheriff Investigators at the Gateway Port of Entry in Brownsville.
At approximately 8:15 p.m., Cameron County Sheriff Investigators and US Customs Agents met with Alvarado at the Brownsville Port of Entry and took him into custody. Alvarado was processed and transported to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito pending arraignment.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
