After one of the greatest regular seasons in Valley history, the Lady ’Hounds’ first playoff series has been set as they start their journey for a record third State Tournament appearance.

With a perfect 10-0 mark in district play en route to their seventh district championship in the last 10 years, San Benito has drawn the struggling Mission High Lady Eagles in round 1.

The lady ’Hounds will be the heavy favorite in the scheduled best-of-three series as Mission barely squeaked into the playoffs despite finishing the season going 2-5 over their last seven games.

Led by one of the best coaching staff in the state and an array of heavy hitters and perfect fielders, San Benito finished with a school record of 30 wins to only three losses. By contrast, Mission finished with an underwhelming 5-14 overall record and despite claiming the final playoff spot in 31-6A, the Lady Eagles compiled a losing district record of 4-6.

“The regular season means nothing to us and our coaching staff has been stressing that this week,” said Martinez. “We’re not looking past Mission High and we’re not taking them lightly. I feel comfortable that this year’s team is ready to make a deep run… We have a roster full of All-stars and our expectations are through the roof. We still have a lot to accomplish.”
