As the playoffs approach for the Greyhound baseball team, a late-season skid has locked San Benito into the fourth seed. Tuesday’s 9-0 loss to Weslaco gave San Benito its third consecutive loss and set up a first-round playoff matchup with the District Champion of 31-6A.
With just one game left in the regular season, the Greyhounds are already preparing for what promises to be a tough start to the playoffs.
Even with its losing streak, San Benito can clinch its third straight winning season on Friday night against Weslaco. Taking revenge against the Panthers would give the Purple and Gold a 16-14 overall record and a small momentum boost going into the playoffs. According to Head Coach Ram Partida, the winner of District 31-6A has not been decided yet as two teams are battling it out for the top spot.
“They are two really good teams so either way, it’s going to be a battle,” said Partida. “We’ve had our moments this season, but we need to be more consistent. I think we can play with anyone so it’s going to be tough for both sides.”
The La Joya Coyotes and the PSJA Bears are currently tied atop the standings in 31-6A. With one game left in the season, it’s possible the two will be crowned Co-District Champions and a tie-breaker process will be needed to determine playoff seeding. With a combined overall record of 33-17, however, neither team poses an insurmountable task for San Benito.
