While San Benito has developed a clear reputation as a football school over the last decade, the Greyhounds have been exceptional in nearly every sport for several years.
The baseball team has been nothing short of a revelation since Athletic Coordinator Ramiro Partida took over the program. That success has been parlayed into what Partida calls the best part of his job: sending athletes to college.
Rowen Garcia, a senior team captain for the baseball squad that is making its third straight playoff appearance next week, officially signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. Garcia is the fourth Greyhound baseball player to earn a college scholarship since Partida was chosen to lead the program.
“It’s really all about the kids and how much work they want to put in,” said Partida. “Rowen is one of the best athletes I’ve seen and his knowledge of the game of baseball is immense. What sets him apart, though, is his work ethic and his desire to be great…He’s a team captain for a reason and I’m excited to see what he does at the next level.”
Rowen Garcia currently leads the fourth-place ’Hounds in runs, extra-base hits and on-base percentage. He’s hitting an impressive .300 on 50 at bats and is one of only two players with double-digit RBIs. Showing his dynamic ability, Rowen Garcia also leads the ’Hounds in wins as a pitcher, sporting a perfect 4-0 record in seven appearances.
