Despite a loss on the night of Tuesday, April 18, 2023, the Greyhound baseball team was able to clinch a playoff spot by way of the third-best record in District 32-6A.
It will be the third consecutive playoff year for the ’Hounds – an unpresented feat for the once bottom-dwelling program. Under the guidance of skipper and Athletic Coordinator Ram Partida, the Greyhounds have been dominant at times this year as flashes of brilliance have been mixed with inconsistent play. After rushing out to a perfect start to their district schedule, the ’Hounds have dropped three of their last five games while scoring a total of four runs in their three losses.
Even with their struggles, San Benito did enough in the early season to guarantee at least a fourth-place finish. With just three games left on the schedule, the Greyhounds are currently tied for the second-best district mark, going 4-3 through the first seven contests.
“We have a young group right now, but they’re motivated to finish the season out strong,” said Partida. “We have some tough games left before the playoffs start, so all our focus is on finishing the regular season strong and playing our best ball when it matters the most.”
The sudden rise of the baseball team in San Benito can be directly attributed to the discipline and pride Partida installed when he took over the program. A longtime assistant coach and eventual Athletic Coordinator, Partida inherited a team that had gone 15-34 in the three seasons before he arrived with two playoff series in 10 years.
