Oct. 1 kicks off the new fiscal year for the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District, and with it, a number of changes have been made for the district of some 9,000-plus students.

First and foremost, residents will be getting a break in their next property taxes as the board recently approved lowering the effective rate by one cent.

The decrease was approved by the board during a recent meeting after the district’s Maintenance & Operations rate was lowered from $1.0126 to $1.0116.

The decrease brought the ad valorem property tax rate to $1.2915, compared to $1.3040 per $100 of property valuation.

The one cent decrease will cost the district $383,000 less in state and local funds from now on, or until voters approve otherwise in an election.

The one cent decrease was proposed by Trustee Janie Lopez and passed in by a 4-2 vote, with trustees Ariel Cruz and Orlando Lopez voting no because of the repercussions the district will have in future funding.

Another change the district has under the new few fiscal year is having a new superintendent. The board, by a 5-to-1 vote, appointed Theresa Servellon after she served as interim for the last six months.
