Hernandez ready for fresh start

As far as she can remember, Alejandra Hernandez has been in and out of foster care.

“My whole life has been about being in the system. My siblings and I, we’ve been in and out, but they’re the reason why I am able to choose a career over a job,” she said.

Hernandez has three brothers and four sisters but currently only lives with her three younger siblings. Meanwhile, her older siblings have moved on to live separate lives.

Hernandez and her siblings have been in the foster care cycle since they were children, moving from shelters to foster homes and back to their mother, only to repeat the cycle all over again. Currently, they reside at Sunny Glen’s Children’s Home.

Although she is originally from Brownsville, Hernandez calls San Benito her hometown.

“A lot of people underestimate San Benito, saying it’s low ranked,” she said. “But I’d say I’m a proud resident of San Benito. My older siblings graduated from this high school, and a lot of grownups have really proved wrong those who thought people from San Benito wouldn’t go anywhere.”
