Rio Hondo ISD confirms first COVID-19 case, 7th in county

STAFF REPORT

A 40-year-old man from Rio Hondo has contracted novel coronavirus COVID-19, Cameron County Public Health announced late Tuesday night. The man is currently in self-isolation.

The person did not travel outside of Cameron County, according to the release, meaning they likely acquired the virus inside the Rio Grande Valley.

Rio Hondo ISD Superintendent Ismael Garza wrote in a district press release that the man infected is a district employee.

“Although we cannot disclose confidential information related to employees, we can confirm that we were informed by the Cameron County Public Health Department on March 24, 2020 that an employee of the District has tested positive for the coronavirus,” read the release.

The person infected took to his personal Facebook account to admit his situation and dispel rumors.

“Everyone needs to listen to the county guidelines. People are saying I was passing food at the school. Don’t let these people cause panic. I was not there.”

Cameron County, as of 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, has been under a shelter-in-place order. The order is for 14 days, or until April 8, 2020.

“Now that we have a possible community-acquired case, it is more important than ever that the public shelter in place as it will assist us in the efforts to minimize the exposure to the community,” Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr., said.
