Sometimes we underestimate the power of social media. We become lost amidst the jungle of drama-filled rants, memes, videos and comment -wars that pollute our news feed that we often forget about the positive things it can be used for. But every now and then, we get a reminder; and for many citizens in our community, that reminder came this week.
Just shortly after 11:00 a.m. Monday, a post from local citizen Balde Olivarez began to grab attention throughout the online community of San Benito. The post was a simple “selfie” with a sign bearing the words, “#yourfightismyfight,” and #love4raymond,” in reference to a former classmate and dear friend named Raymond Resendez who is currently battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Since Balde’s post, countless photos have flooded Facebook and other social media outlets in support of Raymond’s fight.
“I just wanted to do something to show him that we are all behind him,” said Olivarez. “The same thing happened with my mother 13 years ago and people came out of the woodwork to show their support and back then we didn’t have social media to do so. I read a quote the other day that said, ‘when someone gets cancer, the whole family and everyone that loves them do too,’ so that’s why I decided to do something,” he added.
Resendez, who graduated from San Benito High School in 2000………….
