Richard Mata was less than a month shy of his 24th birthday when he was struck by a truck and killed in August of 2014. He had three kids and one on the way and was looked to as the primary provider for his family. Since then, the family has waited for justice to be served, and they are hoping October 9th will be that day.
After months of rescheduling, Karina Cardenas, the Brownsville woman who was behind the wheel on that tragic early morning in August, has finally plead no contest to the charge of Accident Involving Death. The third degree felony is punishable by anywhere from 2 to 10 years in prison.
“Every time we go to court, we see her there with a smirk on her face like she doesn’t even care,” said Dora Rodriguez, the mother of Mata. “I already told the District Attorney that they better make sure she gets what she deserves or I’ll do something about it myself.”
