Eleven-year-old Team Captain Lauren Sanchez can be seen from the stands with her big purple bow, decorated with her name and number sixty-four in her hair at every game for the Texas Youth Football Association San Benito Greyhounds Jr. Division. The fifth grade straight-A student from Idea Public Schools is playing her second year with the TYFA team as an offensive right guard and left tackle, and her first year as a defensive end. During her first year, she was the only girl in the Jr. Division of the league, and for the first game of that year she was already on the field as a first string player. “As soon as she pulled her helmet off (I heard other fans say), ‘Oh my gosh, [that player] is a girl!?”, Lauren’s mother, Laura Sanchez, recalled.
