When Eric Arizpe is on, the San Benito Greyhounds are hard to beat.
The ‘Hounds’ hurler fanned six and scattered six hits as he got superb defense behind him in a 6-2, Parent’s Night win over Brownsville Lopez on Friday night at Greyhound Park.
The Greyhounds (7-5 overall, 2-3 in district) trailed early but battled back to pick up another all-important District 32-6A victory.
Arizpe was consistent throughout, showing good placement on his pitches and getting great defensive play behind him. This was evident in the later innings as Arizpe struck out the side in the sixth inning.
Another of a pitcher’s best friends besides solid glove work is run-support and the ‘Hounds gave Arizpe just that, pounding out six hits.
Trailing 1-0, San Benito got on the board in the third inning when Isaac Sanchez drew a walk, swiftly stole second base and eventually scored to knot the game at 1.
The teams traded defensive efforts and remained deadlocked until the fifth inning.
Later in that fifth frame, the ‘Hounds exploded for three more runs by taking advantage of shoddy pitching from Lopez. Jestin Sauceda got aboard with a walk, stole second base and eventually scored. Later, Victor Gaitan got on and stole second and then grabbed third as well before coming home. David Vargas also received a free pass and turned it into the ‘Hounds’ fourth run.
With a 4-1 lead in his back pocket, Arizpe allowed a leadoff double in the sixth inning before buckling down and striking out the Lobos’ next three hitters (Jesus Rodriguez, A.B. Gonzalez and Jose Serino).
San Benito got two insurance runs in the home half of the sixth when Chris Padilla and Alfonso Mireles each came home. The Lobos scratched across their second run in their final at-bat for the final margin.
The ‘Hounds will travel to Harlingen South on Tuesday night before returning home against Brownsville Rivera on Thursday night.
