SAN BENITO — The tradition continues.

In what’s become a yearly occurrence, the San Benito girls wrestling team is again recording successes every time they hit the mats.

This year’s girls have already captured second-place finishes at two meets and are expected to be near the top of the district standings.

“We’ve got a young team this year,” said Crispin Lopez, who’s in his eighth year as head oach. “We have three girls with experience and quite a few juniors and sophomores. But we’ve got a lot of matches in with the younger girls and they’re getting experience and learning the process.”

The three returnees include junior captain Christy Satterfield, senior captain Leslie Puente and senior Valeria De La Fuente. Satterfield, a state alternate qualifier a year ago, is the seasoned veteran who leads by example, Lopez said.

“She’s the leader of the group,” Lopez said of Satterfield. “Her strength is her technique. She’s got a lot of wrestling savvy. She’s overcome injuries and how she’s peaking at the right time.”

Along with the three veterans, a host of underclassmen make up this year’s Lady ’Hounds squad. They include Ely Rico, Katie Castro, Esmeralda Rodriguez, Krystal De La Garza, Perla Durantes, Rosa Caballero, Veronica Heredia, Paola Gonzalez, Marissa Qurioz and Yaneicy Jimenez. Coach Leticia Pope serves as Lopez’s assistant.

The Lady ’Hounds took home second place at the Dog Pound Classic in McAllen while doing the same for the La Joya Coyote Invitational and have recorded a host of other victories in their various weight classes. They stand at 10-4 on the year after a narrow 30-27 loss at home to La Joya High on Thursday night.

Under Lopez, the girls program has won four district championships, including three straight (2010-2013) and will look to add to that tally this season.

Their final meet of the year in preparation for the 15-team District 16-6A meet is a quad meet at Edinburg North on Jan. 24. The 16-6A meet is slates for Feb. 6-7 at Mission while the Region-IV meet is set for Feb. 13-14 in San Antonio. The state wrestling meet will be held Feb. 20-21 in Garland.
