The South Texas Adult Resource and Training (START) Center hosted GLOBONO, a Pro Bono Initiative of the Texas Title Project, on Jan. 15 at its office in San Benito.

President and CEO of the START Center Ron Rogers said, “A group of students, would-be attorneys from UT (the University of Texas at Austin) came; they were trying to help local individuals who needed (the Residence Homestead) exemption.”

The Residence Homestead Exemption provides qualified applicants exemptions on their principal residence. Homestead exemptions remove part of the home’s value from taxation and thereby lower taxes. For example, if a home is appraised at $100,000 and a person qualifies for a $15,000 exemption (an amount mandated by school districts), the person would pay school taxes on the home as if it were worth only $85,000.
