While there’s always plenty going on in the news world, the sports scene in the San Benito area certainly had its say in 2014. There were highs and lows, but all in all, it was a tremendous sports year in San Benito and beyond.
Here are the area’s top 10 local sports stories of the year:

10. Lady Hounds hire new girls hoops coach
San Benito girls basketball got a new look when Abel Moreno was hired away from Brownsville Rivera to guide the Lady ’Hounds program. Moreno took over for the successful Clarisse Arredondo, who’d previously turned around the program. Though the progress has been steady, the foundation is being set for what hopes to be a return to basketball glory for San Benito.

9. Golfer Valle takes another district title
Emma Valle has become synonymous with golf success. The San Benito sensation captured her second straight individual district title last season and secured a third consecutive trip to the 5A regional golf tournament. Already one of the area’s most accomplished players, Valle will look to make it 4-for-4 next spring to close out her prep career.
