Each year as I get older, Christmas seems to come around faster and faster.
In past years, the weeks leading up to December 25 seemed to last an eternity.
Then again, as kids, we rarely have a realistic concept of time.
Many of us probably remember being very young and counting down the days and the hours until it was time to open gifts.
As the years go by, and as I edge ever-so-closer to becoming a grumpier old me, I can’t help but feel that maybe I’ve simply become jaded with the holiday season. What used to be the one time of year (besides my birthday) that I truly looked forward to had become just another number on the calendar.
Well, that’s what I thought earlier this week.
Around comes Christmas Eve, and I catch myself asking, “Why is that magic gone? Why don’t I even look forward to Christmas outside of having a day off from work?”
I didn’t let it get me down. I just kind of dealt with it as I do every year. Maybe it’s just a part of growing older. Before you know it, Christmas has come and gone.
Then I handed a present to my girlfriend, Claudia. She was going to be spending Christmas day with her family, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to let her have an early gift as I wouldn’t be seeing her for the larger part of the day.
She said, “I’ll only open one if you open one.” She didn’t have to tell me twice.
It wasn’t long after that before my mom gave Claudia her gift and told her she could open it. Then Claudia gave my mom a gift. Before long, we were all opening presents on Christmas Eve. My family typically waits until Christmas morning.
At some point during all that, I realized that this was a year of firsts. This is the first Christmas of what I hope is many more with Claudia. This was my first week of handling the San Benito News on a tight — well, tighter-than-usual — deadline. This is my first year trying to lead the way for the San Benito News’ editorial and news content.
It wasn’t long before I realized that there are a lot of cool, great things going on in my life and in the lives of those around me.
I’m still working my way around as I learn about San Benito. It seems like every day I meet somebody new.
Every day, somebody comes in looking for Mike, and is surprised that he’s no longer with the News. Every day that same somebody will shake my hand and say, “Congratulations on your new position.”
I’m glad that everyone has been welcoming as I step up to the plate and continue forward with the San Benito News that Mike worked so hard to build over the nine years he spent here.
It’s not without its growing pains. It’s definitely not always easy. Still, helping build a community newspaper that’s read by many is a great feeling.
Sometimes, it just takes a little reminder to let us know that we have a lot to be grateful for. I’m glad I had mine.
