Ladies and gentlemen, get your tamales ready.

The sixth annual San Benito News “Best Tamales in Town” contest is set for Friday, Dec. 19.

As always, the contest is open to the public. Everyone is invited to bring one dozen of their best tamales to the News office on 356 N. Sam Houston Blvd. in San Benito by noon that day.

The judging will take place shortly after with the winner being announced once the scores are tallied.

The determining factors are: taste, texture, originality and presentation.

Past judges have included local and state officials such as former and current San Benito Mayors Joe H. Hernandez and Celeste Z. Sanchez; State Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. and musician Noe Pro.

In addition, members of the community, local business owners and loyal readers have all been judged in the past.

The event has attracted up to 100 spectators to the News office, the site of the contest.

It is also an opportunity for the public to tour the newsroom while enjoying tamales and refreshments provided by the staff.

Last year’s winner was Joel Lievanos of Brownsville.

This year’s winner will receive a $100 gift card from one of the contest’s sponsors as well as being featured in an article published in the following issue of the News.

Past winners have actually received dozens of orders for tamales following news of their success at the annual tamale contest.

Lievanos said, “We received more orders than usual (after winning) last year.”

Those looking to compete may be interested in knowing that Lievanos intends in competing this year as well.

Despite his award-winning tamales, Lievanos remained humble, saying he will enter and see how things go this year.

Judges this year will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
