San Benito CISD officials are currently conducting contract negotiations with the lone finalist for the superintendent of schools position.

The SBCISD Board of Trustees on Thursday, Nov. 6, named Dr. Marc Puig as the lone finalist via a 7-0 unanimous vote. Puig currently serves as superintendent of Culberson County-Allamoore ISD in Van Horn, located in west Texas. There is no word, however, on when a contractual agreement between the district and the lone finalist for SBCISD superintendent will be reached.

“We can’t do anything until after the 21 days,” said Board President Arnold Padilla, explaining that nothing can be signed until then.

The 21-day waiting period is Texas state law that allows for negotiations and vetting prior to a lone finalist transitioning into his or her role as superintendent. This occurs since there is no contractual obligation during that time period.

Because pay and other terms of the contract are still being negotiated, Padilla said the district is currently unable to provide more details.

However, by the time the 21-day period is complete, the board hopes to reach an agreement on Puig’s contract, according to Padilla.

Puig, who holds a bachelor’s and a master’s from the University of Texas at Arlington and in May 2014 completed his doctorate in education from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, said, “I am tremendously humbled and honored to have been selected to serve the San Benito community, and I look forward to working with every member of the community to create a burning focus on children. If anyone wishes to come by and visit, my door is wide-open.”

School district officials have hailed Puig for having a “hybrid” background with experience in both business and education. His experience includes serving as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent, as previously reported.

Specifically, Puig has “spent seven years in the corporate world as an account executive, research analyst and project manager for a national marketing firm based in Fort Worth,” district officials stated in a press release.

Also, Puig was named the Region 18 Superintendent of the Year, and his board was recognized as a 2014 Texas Honor Board – one of only five districts in the state to earn this distinction.

Furthermore, Puig led a TEA Exemplary campus while working as a principal for Dallas ISD and won the “Outstanding Dissertation of the Year” award from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor – this for his research in public school governance and student achievement.

What’s more, Puig serves as a mentor superintendent for the Texas Association of School Administrators Learning for Leadership Program.

“He has made numerous professional presentations statewide, including workshops on how to establish strategic board-superintendent relations, curriculum policy and visioning,” the press release reads, further stating that Puig is a registered provider of board training credit through the Texas Education Agency. “Most recently, Dr. Puig was selected to present at the 2015 National School Boards Association Conference in Nashville on the topic ‘school board influence on student outcomes.’”
