Cutting the cord is the cable plan I’ve always wanted. As media giants like Time Warner take steps to keep up with the increased demand for streaming content, we are seeing more options for those who are ditching the traditional cable box in favor of the almighty app.
HBO recently announced plans to introduce a new app that should be ready for launch in 2015. This will eliminate the need for a cable subscription and allow users to watch or stream the network’s content. Currently, users must have a cable subscription and pay for HBO on top of that in order to stream its content on their devices.
Cord cutting is an idea that’s recently gained traction as internet connection speeds increase and broadband becomes more available. It involves dropping traditional cable services and subscribing to individual services such as Netflix, Hulu, the WWE Network and others. Many of these are available for $8 to $12 a month. A handful of channels with the content you want end up sounding like quite the deal.
The WWE Network, for instance, enables subscribers to watch live pay-per-view events as part of its $9.99 per month plan, which includes 24/7 programming in which users can stream wrestling programming of their choosing.
Cutting the cord still leaves a lot to be desired. Much of the content people like to watch isn’t available on services like Netflix.
There will always be the folks who choose to keep their traditional cable services complete with all 500 channels (Hi, Mom!), but as more content becomes available and more networks jump onboard, we will see more people subscribing to the idea — and the content.
