HARLINGEN – In a varsity volleyball game held at Harlingen South on Sept. 30, the San Benito Lady ’Hounds and the Lady Hawks went toe to toe in a very intense game.

In the first set, the Lady Hawks won with a close score of 30-28. However, the Lady ’Hounds got back on their feet and won the second set with a score of 25-12, proving that they were the comeback team. Harlingen South dropped the third set to San Benito, 25-20, and the fourth by a score of 25-18 –spelling victory for the Lady ’Hounds in four.

Jennifer Torres (No. 3) scored a total of 23 points on serves; Dina Treviño (No. 2) accounted for 17 kills; Monica Garcia (No. 10) racked up 15 kills and two blocks; Kristen Alegria (No. 5) had seven kills and six blocks; Claire Gomez (No. 18) put up 55 assists as a setter; and Adriana Deleon (No. 1) came up with 52 digs.

The Lady ’Hounds are currently at 3-3 in District 32-6A and 9-9 overall.

Coach Yolanda Garza of the San Benito Lady ’Hounds said, “They are coming around. They are really doing awesome, hitting harder and (getting) better.”

She added, “I have so much confidence in them. Even when we are down I have confidence that we will come from behind like we usually do.”

A coach’s job is never done. Besides training, the coach has to keep the members open-minded and motivated on and off the court.

San Benito next faces Brownsville Rivera at noon on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Greyhound varsity gym.
