RIO HONDO – City of Rio Hondo officials confirmed this week that Chief Weldon Matlock of the Rio Hondo Police Department has stepped down from his post.

Currently, RHPD Sergeant Victor Tamayo is assigned as interim police chief.

“Mr. Matlock – he moved on to another job,” said Rio Hondo Mayor Gus Olivares on Friday. “That was his decision.”

The mayor said he was uncertain when Matlock’s departure was effective.

“I don’t have the exact date, but it’s been a little bit more than a week or so; it’s going on to two weeks already,” said Olivares, who went on to explain that the city has already begun taking applications to fill the position.

However, the city has yet to advertise for the post with the San Benito News, which is the municipality’s official newspaper of record.

Still, City Administrator Ben Medina is expected to review the applications and present the top three to the Rio Hondo City Commission in hopes of finding a new police chief within the next two or three weeks, the mayor said.

It was not confirmed as of press time whether Matlock officially resigned. The News is currently awaiting response to a public information request filed with the city that seeks a resignation letter from Matlock. It should be noted, however, that the request was made after the city’s hours of operation on Friday, Oct. 3.
