BREAKING: San Benito man among six arrested in alleged straw purchasing scheme

San Benito Logo_w:skyBROWNSVILLE  – Two separate, but related, indictments have been partially unsealed following the arrest of six local residents for their roles in purchasing firearms using false statements, announced U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson.

Those arrested today include Miguel Angel Luiton, 23, of San Benito; Jose Dosal, 34, and Ester Cardenas, 28, both of Harlingen; and Brownsville residents Ike Samuel Jr., 25, Jose De Jesus Ruiz, 23, and Fabian Medina, 23.

The indictments were returned under seal Aug. 26, 2014, and partially unsealed upon their arrests today. They are expected to make their initial appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ignacio Tortella today. The indictments will remain sealed as to those charged but not as yet in custody.

The indictments charge all individuals with a conspiracy to make false statements and making false statements in a firearm transaction record. If convicted, they each face up to five years in federal prison and a possible maximum fine of $250,000.

The indictments were the result of an organized crime Drug Enforcement Task Force investigation dubbed “Operation Six Corners” conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Angel Castro is prosecuting the case.”
