City of San Benito garbage rates are expected to increase by more than 4 percent, which officials confirmed is a result of contractual obligations with the company conducting waste disposal.

Ordinance No. 2409-G, which the City administration was expected to present to members of the San Benito City Commission Tuesday evening, will change the residential single-family rate of $18.63 to $19.47 – a 4.51 increase.

The ordinance will not only affect the City’s residential solid waste collection rates but multi-unit and commercial customers as well. Specifically, multi-unit and commercial rates are also expected to increase by 4.51 percent, from $35.93 to $37.55.

Also, additional containers under the new ordinance would cost single-family and multi-unit residences an added $8.30 per month charge – up from $7.94 – if requested.

City Manager Manuel Lara said on Tuesday that a contract Allied Waste Services stipulates annual 4.51 rate increases.

“The cost will escalate by 4.5 percent, so we’re starting the new year and that’s the agreed amount for it to go up,” Lara said. “It’s part of a contract, but although we have a signed contract we’re just disclosing to the Commission that this is coming up. We’ve also budgeted this and put this as a public item (on a Commission meeting agenda) so that they know there’s an increase of solid waste collection service.”

Lara said the contract will extend for the next three to four more years, adding that the annual rate increases cannot exceed 4.51 percent.

“We have a signed, binding contract, but we do want to make sure that the public and elected officials are aware that it’ll go into effect Oct. 1,” Lara said of the effective date.

Commissioners were scheduled to conduct the first reading of Ordinance No. 2409-G at a regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Will there goes my six pack money. I’ll just have to buy two instead of just one . Who do you like that Math?

  1. I am doing a year to year comparison on my spare time on how much the garbage rates have increased which I will post later.

Meanwhile, you can ponder on this….

The monthly waste collection rate in September of 2007 was $15.25

The new proposed effective October 1, 2014 waste collection rate will be $19.47

If my math is correct, in the last 7 years that is a $4.22 increaseand a 22% increase to the monthly waste collection.

In reply to the question by #DOWN IN THE DUMPSTER [When was the last time the city went out for bids for waste services?]

I believe the city is under a long term contract where rate increases are linked to the CPI (Consumer Price Index) and I believe it also caps the rate increase at 4.5%. However, in 2013 the percentage increase was 5.61%, if my math is correct.

I will try to find out when that contract is expiring.

It is what it Is, if you know what I mean!

      CORRECTION:

So they raise the rate and pick up less times per week. What’s wrong with that picture?? And the bad news?? It was part of the contract! I wonder what other surprises are ‘a result of contractual obligations’??
    The GAME is RIGGED.
