LOS FRESNOS – Surely, the sting hasn’t subsided completely.

For the Los Fresnos Falcons, letting a 19-point lead slip away, which resulted in a crushing 22-19 loss last Friday against Edinburg North, can either break them or show just what kind of men they are.

The Falcons have a chance to atone for last week when they travel to the Mid-Valley to face 0-1 Edcouch-Elsa at Benny Layton Memorial Stadium.

Things started positively for Los Fresnos as it got touchdown catches by Pete Perez and Raul Lopez sandwiched around a TD run by quarterback Pierce Ruiz.

But a 16-point third quarter from Edinburg North started the tide in the other direction and the Falcons couldn’t stop the bleeding. The Cougars’ Diego Sanchez won the game with a 33-yard boot with nine seconds to go in the game.

Los Fresnos will look to improve a 276-total yard outing (including just 65 rushing) against an Edcouch-Elsa team which had some issues of its own in a 48-28 loss to McAllen Rowe.

The Jackets fell behind big against the Warriors, trailing 34-7 at the half. E-E is a young squad looking to replace starters, so this will be a great measuring stick for both teams. Los Fresnos looking to avenge a disappointment against a Maquina team looking to find their footing.

Should be a great game in Elsa.

LA JOYA JUAREZ-LINCOLN at RIO HONDO

If all goes according to plan, this one should be a great test for Coach Rocky James’ defense.

Rio Hondo (1-0), fresh off a 35-0 blasting of Santa Rosa, gets another home date as the Bobcats welcome in 0-1 Juarez-Lincoln.

The Bobcats used a suffocating defense to limit the Warriors to just 86 yards of total offense, recorded eight sacks and forced four turnovers, one of those a fumble return for a touchdown.

For the Cats, MLB Daniel Flores had 15 total tackles to lead the way for an all-around effort for the unit which will be looked to carry this squad.

The offense started a tad slowly but came on like wildfire, especially after halftime. RB Alan Alfaro led the way with 93 yards and three rushing scores (5, 1 and 33 yards) as the Cats got going.

They’ll face a Husky team (0-1) who was defeated soundly at the hands of PSJA Memorial, 33-0. The Huskies are a Class 5A squad who are looking for their first-ever playoff berth.

Juarez-Lincoln amassed just 126 total yards vs. PSJA Memorial and will look to up that number.

EDINBURG VELA at HARLINGEN SOUTH

So much for that mismatch. Whoops!

In a game which it was a heavy underdog, Harlingen South sent shockwaves throughout the Valley with their impressive 38-28 win over Weslaco at Bobby Lackey Stadium.

The Hawks hung tough and stuck together in one of the program’s most impressive wins in recent memory considering the lack of resources (38 varsity players in Week 1) and lack of returning experience.

For South, Steven Rodriguez and Alec Garza each scored twice against the Panthers to definitely put some pep in the Hawks’ step.

Now another solid test comes calling in the form of the Edinburg Vela SaberCats.

The Cats (1-0) bombed Brownsville Pace 56-21 to start their march toward what many believe will be a playoff spot.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Boggus Stadium.

HARLINGEN vs. SAN ANTONIO REAGAN

After taking Week 1 off, the Harlingen Cardinals begin a streak of what figures to be much more than 10 weeks of football as they take on perennial power San Antonio Reagan at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.

Harlingen (0-0) is relying on another sound defense to carry the squad while a young offense comes around.

Reagan, which employs a two-quarterback system, fell to O’Connor last week and is looking for its first win.
