Dates for residential garbage collection service will be changed effective Sept. 9.
The new collection days will be Tuesday and Friday, according to City Manager Manuel Lara.
“The date changes should result in a more efficient collection of garbage,” he said.
The new dates do not affect the collection of garbage from commercial establishments.
Bulk items and brush collection days will not be affected by this change.
Currently Republic Services, also known locally as Allied Waste Services, runs on a three-zone schedule with collection sometimes occurring on Saturdays. As Saturday is not a workday, the collection trucks encounter problems in reaching the garbage containers due to the cars parked along the streets, Ray Tamez, with Republic Services said. According to the City, the change to a Thursday and Friday schedule enables a more efficient garbage collection.
“Residents will continue to receive service on two days, they have just changed which days,” Tamez said.
As a reminder, all wastes must be bagged or contained inside the cart, as per city ordinance. “This helps to keep the City clean by preventing blowing trash when the cart s dumped into the garbage truck,” Tamez said.
Carts must be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on service day. Also, carts must be at least five feet away from any other objects including other carts, mailboxes, parked cars, meters, fire hydrants and utility poles.
Residents are also reminded to make sure the cart handles are facing the house, so that when the cart is lifted, the lid opens toward the garbage truck on the street.
Broken and damaged carts will be replaced or repaired by Republic Services free of charge when requested through the City’s Utility/Cashiers department.
Stolen carts will be replaced after the resident provides a police report.

Why do they even spend money or need money to sign their names on a piece of paper and maybe pay a registration fee to run for a political office in such a small town? POLITICAL DONATIONS?
I am not alleging anything here nor is it illegal to receive political donations from businesses doing business with the City of San Benito but according to the San Benito News report “AT ALL COSTS: Candidates spend more than $60K on campaigns”, and just for the record:
“Pl. 1 City Commission incumbent Antonio P. Gonzales reported a total of $2,000 in contributions, of which $1,000 was from Cruz-Hogan Consultants, $500 from Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson, LLP and $500 from Republic Services-Allied Waste. Gonzales reported a total of $1,590.94 in expenditures but did not include a list of individual expenditures. He also reported that $409.56 in contributions had been maintained.”
Also for the record, I like the San Benito News. It does some pretty awesome comprehensive reporting and coverage that the citizens need to be aware of. Some elected officials may not like the reporting but $(&#@ them!!
Well,Tony needs to explain this to the people of San Benito.Got to say it looks real bad,sure there’s a reasonable explanation,but lets hear it,just to clear the air.
The trash will now be picked up one less day per week but supposedly be more efficient? Sure, I believe that. NOT.
On the same agenda was an item of equal concern. This was a un-budgeted request for a computer tech? Is this something the City Manager put on the agenda due to a real need, or was this put on by some City Commissioners trying to do a political payback favor?? Let’s just suppose it was the latter. I wonder who that favor might be for? What do you think Ronnie?
