It’s official: Football time in San Benito is here.

Thursday night was the first chance the community got to meet their football team as the annual “Meet the Greyhounds” event at Bobby Morrow Stadium was a smash hit.

Each football squad from varsity to freshman got to soak in the support from a good crowd on hand to cheer on the ’Hounds. In addition, cheerleading and dance teams from SBHS and VMS along with the Mighty Greyhound Band all made their presence felt on a night full of spirit.

Superintendent of schools Antonio G. Limón introduced the Board of Trustees (more on them later), and emcee Mario Medrano made sure everyone on the field was recognized. The event was again organized in part by the San Benito Quarterback Club.

Additionally, this was the first “Meet the Greyhounds” event for head coach/athletic director Dan Gomez, who was excited for his players to meet the community and get things going.

“It’s very special,” he said. “The kids work so hard and they deserve these types of events because of all of that hard work they put in. The community comes out and supports them and the kids see that and feed off of that. It’s a real good deal and it definitely kicks off the season the right way.”

Gomez introduced the varsity football team and coaching staff, all of whom got rousing applause and cheers. The ’Hounds are intent on making some noise this season as they look to atone for last year’s disappointing 3-7 record.

After introductions and pleasantries were completed, SBCISD board members took part in the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge,” the craze which is designed to raise awareness for ALS—also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease—and has taken the nation by storm. Led by Board President Arnold Padilla, the trustees were doused in ice water in a show of spirit and goodwill. Defensive coordinator Haskell Buff and later Gomez also took part in the challenge, much to the crowd’s delight.

Friday’s scrimmage served as a tuneup for when the real games begin next Friday, Aug. 29 against Edinburg High at Bobby Morrow Stadium.

I would not mind paying more school taxes at all. What I do mind is paying increased school taxes and having it all taken by others,or diverted to people for their personal gain/projects.This seems to be the way of the city and the school board, and this is why both are as screwed up as they are.Think once again that it’s all a matter of priorities,in the case of the city the last on the list is the citizens,in the case of the school system the last on the list, the students of course.
    Yeah,you’re right Uncle Sugar.

It really bothers me that people in the community complain that there is not enough of this or enough of that. How about we raise school taxes so that we can have enough seats so the students can have somewhere to sit during lunch. I bet those complaining that we don’t have enough of something are the first to complain when taxes go up.

Typical response…raise taxes. Go deeper in debt! That will fix everything! NOT.
How about cutting some of the deadbeat SBCISD staff by 20%?? There is enough waste in the SBCISD to build a cafeteria the size of the stadium!! SPEAKING of the stadium..what a WASTE of taxpayer dollars!

I do believe that the school board’s meeting have a section called “public comments”. if you think that raising the taxes is not the solution, I suggest that you attend the meetings and express your concerns. Or, we can threaten the school board and the superintendent to call TEA. I’m sure you can get something done by doing so.

I don’t know where you get the idea that raising taxes is the answer. The district has enough money,if our board would stop spending the funds on ignorant ideas our district would be fine. We as taxpayers need to voice our opinions when it comes to the school board spending funds on ignorant ideas. This board should prioritize on what needs more attention and not worry where can they make money or do a favor for someone. All this compadrismo needs to stop do what is right for our district so we can shine and be proud. Our children are the ones getting the short end of the stick . Remember that teachers are the ones that work and mold our childrens minds everyday. Give them a raise. I was at the game this Friday and as we were cheering for our mighty Greyhounds I couldn’t help, but think in spite of all the chaos in our district it was great seeing our Greyhounds win.

Juan: Very very true… I have seen it myself. Eating standing up or on the floor is wrong wrong wrong! Go visit the high school.
SBCISD should be called into TEA

Who cares get the kids some place to sit down to eat lunch, maybe they’ll be able to think alittle better, than if they have to stand up and eat.

    To Ricky Rabbit:
Who cares about beating Harlingen? Your 7 board member care. All coach gant did was beat Harlingen and they gave him a raise and extended his contract…. That’s who cares!
I agree… Coach Helms should have been recruited to come to San Benito… but oh no, those board members know better… really… not even!

PS Welcome to Purple Greyhound Country! Not War Dog Country.

When is the cafeteria going to be furnished with seats for the students to sit on while they eat lunch, using our tax funds. It’s been that way for some time now,get someplace for the students to sit at lunchtime, stop worrying with the football team, don’t you people have any sense whatsoever?

    to cindy…
who really cares about harlingen…i myself dont think that is the most important game at all…winning district championship and goin far in the playoffs is whats important…i could careless if we play harlingen or not…this guy attitude is far much better than gannt and i see him push the kids during practice…gannt did not….these kids believe in him and the other coaches…he will make things better….just give the guy a chance and see how he does… i wanted coach helms to be out coach in the beginning but somehow the school board screw things up by hiring gannt instead of helms and helms didnt even bother applying this past yr…whose to blame him…

To the rabbit: not everyone is behind this man. But watch, all he will have to do is guide the team over a victory Harlingen high school. The same thing coach gant did and they will extend his contract… Not so soon as there will be a new supt in town by then… We’ll let us at least hope so
