Local police have arrested a San Benito woman accused of writing hot checks for approximately $12,000.

Lorena Mendiola Treviño, 27, of San Benito was arrested on July 28, when she was charged with forgery, felony theft and fraud.

On July 17, officers with the San Benito Police Department responded to a theft at Matt’s Cash & Carry. Representatives from the store said Treviño placed two orders for building materials which totaled $12,007.55.

Reportedly, Treviño had the materials delivered to her residence on two separate occasions—July 8 and July 11. Employees from Matt’s Cash & Carry delivered the items, at which time Treviño allegedly paid with a hot check that later bounced.

Through investigation, it was discovered that a bag containing a checkbook had been stolen two months prior. The victim in this theft allegedly did not report the checkbook as stolen because the account had been closed for two years.

On July 28, a SBPD officer made contact with Treviño at her residence, and she was placed under arrest for five outstanding felony warrants and one outstanding misdemeanor warrant. Treviño was taken to the police station where she was charged with the following: two felony counts of forgery, two felony thefts, fraudulent use or possession of information and one misdemeanor theft. She was arraigned by Judge David Garza and bail was set at $43,000.
