An early morning car crash on July 4 claimed the life of a 21-year-old San Benito man.

At approximately 1:37 a.m. on Friday, a red Saturn Aurora driven by Alex Guerra Jr. of San Benito was traveling west on Pennsylvania Avenue in San Benito. As the vehicle approached a curve, it was reportedly driving at an unsafe speed, according to Trooper Johnny Hernandez of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Hernandez said Guerra lost control of the vehicle and was unable to negotiate the curve. This caused the vehicle to strike a tree and rollover, Hernandez reported.

Guerra was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined Guerra was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact. The accident is still being investigated by the DPS.
