Seventh grade ELA teacher Herminia Garcia is seen addressing the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees Tuesday evening along with fellow educator Irma Clark.

More than 30 educators and support staff from Miller Jordan Middle School have come together to express their concerns about the stability of the campus – this as a result of fears that the school may incur its eighth principal reassignment in seven years.

The educators in question called for stability after hearing reports that San Benito CISD administrators may be planning to reassign MJMS Principal Mary Alice Leal to another campus; they would not, however, disclose the source of said reports.

How did testing go Miller Jordan? How did the 8th graders do in Math and Reading?

When all other school districts are highlighting their achievements and promoting higher student learning by placing highly effective teachers in every classroom at all grade levels with the resources needed and new or upgraded facilities here is SBCISD which is losing and/or lost focus on student achievement and post-high school success. What a disservice to our youth. They deserve and have every right to receive a high quality education.

Why has SB created the practice of only hiring administrators that are already employed by SBCISD. Are we that arrogant that we think that someone with experience in another district couldn’t serve in that capacity? Let’s see if the same happens when new superintendent is selected. Good luck to this district if that is the case.

Here’s the solution. Get rid of Leal. From what it sounds like shes been bought and sold by many people in the district. Get rid of supporting administration too. They’re all too familiar with the politics of San Benito. Bring in absolute new outsiders that have no connection to this corruptly controlled school district. They can run Miller Jordan Middle School without any bias or special interest other than for the students. This will keep all teachers and students accountable. When the football team suffers a horrible couple of seasons they run the coach out of town for his poor performance and bring in some outsider, why can’t we do that for poor administrations as well. Makes sense to me but maybe that’s too simple for SBCISD when drama and “compadres” run things.

    Someone give me an AMEN

That is why Rigo was run off. Teachers had it made in the shade with him. A real admin came in and put the teachers to work and what you see and hear now is the result of it. Maybe Leal doesn’t deserve to be there. But has she really been given a chance? Maybe Martinez didn’t deserve to be there. But she wasn’t given a chance. Some teachers want a Rigo administrator to be in place there at MJMS and some teachers want Leal to stay in place there at MJMS and give her just that – a chance.

What to do? What to do? Decisions. Decisions.

  1. Frank, you keep asking for proof and what proof do you have? I dare any San Benito tax payer to go to open records since martinez’s administration and you will find fraud deception and lies. She should have been terminated. And now leal was placed there by the fantastic four to come down hard on the teachers who on fact brought things to light. Leal is even worse than Martinez because she is a liar. She is protected by one board member that has benefitted by ordering shirts for the football players that and having benefit tables at a restaurant using those players. Talk about brown nosing. Not to mention partying and getting drunk with those teachers that represented her at the board meeting. Pathetic. Guess they need another vodka shot. More brown nosing. I dare you to proof how great you think she is. It took her five years to improve scores at Fred booth yet at rangerville she had a petition of 500 parents who wanted her out. We don’t have to proof anything to the public. The people who are in charge of the district have all the facts . There decision will come with or without your approval frank. Sadly why aren’t the students and parents defending her!

So if you say you have proof, we are all listening; if not please just shut up and stop insulting people. I can guarantee that if this was one of your family members or friends going through this situation you would be hollering and whining in their defense. The thing is, these teachers are standing up for themselves, so why are they categorized right away as lazy or troublemakers? If leal is as good as you say she is, she needs to let the teachers do their job and stop micromanaging; after all they are all professionals. I do agree that all this bickering needs to stop, and the truth will come out for one side or the other. Like the good book says, ” whats in darkness shall come to light.” At the end, I hope and pray our kids come out better after all the dust has settled.

Im in the ready set teach program at SBHS and every Tuesdays and Thursdays we would visit Miller Jordan to help and assist students, until we had problems with the dean and administration. We were not welcomed there at all for one, we also got told things like they didn’t want “un experienced assistants”.With all those problems going on it was just too much for not only us but our Ready Set Teach teacher, so to settle everything we transferred to Berta Cabaza and in the end we ended up winning because my new mentor teacher there is now Mrs. Garcia and as her former student I can say she’s a great teacher, she always pushed me to do my best and reach my goals with a mindset that anything is possible. My reading scores were always high with her and she always made it fun for us to learn. I don’t know how you can say she doesn’t do anything when I’ve seen from two perspectives how a hard working teacher she is.

Let’s try to be rational and think this through. Maybe there are teachers that need to be weeded out of Middle Jordan. Maybe a group of teachers are not good for students. Maybe this group does infuse venom into Miller. Now, let’s analyze the situation. Shouldn’t a seasoned principal like Mrs. Leal know how to document staff without being deceitful. Shouldn’t she know how to diffuse volatile issues. Hasn’t Mrs Leal received training on how to handle staff. Why bid teachers against teachers. Why are teachers going to the media. Why are teachers attending board meeting to back Mrs. Leal. How do they know that Mrs. Leal needs backing up. These are things that make you go hmm. A good principal brings a school together, not tears it apart.

By my understanding the mistreatment to these teachers stems back about 2 years when the previous principal was there and the principal that is at MJMS now picked up where the other principal left off. She has done nothing but intimidate her teachers and staff. She has convinced some of her teachers to lie in order to get other teachers in trouble. When Mrs. Martinez was there, she reshuffled her staff just so that certain teachers would not teach the subject they had been teaching for years. What principal jeopardizes the students’ education, by doing that? I have personally worked with Mrs. Janie Garcia and she is an awesome educator. Her Reading scores had always be in the 90’s. From the very beginning, Mrs. Leal and Mrs. Martinez were out to get Mrs. Garcia and other teachers out of MJMS. Mrs. Martinez changed her job assignment from reading teacher to science just so Mrs. Garcia would not teach that certain subject, she took alot of her assigned positions away, and the list goes on. I stick by Mrs. Garcia and all the teachers that are trying to do the right thing, which is to educate the students to their full potential. The students at MJMS loved Mrs. Garcia. I wish we had more educators like her. How ironic that they both have the same first and middle name.

This was my experience with Mrs. Leal. I know what we lived as do many others. Proof? Ask Antonio Limon. Over 30 parent went to voice their concerns while she was at Rangerville. There was also a petition with hundreds of signatures supporting her removal. Mr. Limon reassigned Mrs. Leal due to parent and teacher complaints. As a matter of fact, her reassignment was to an assistant principal position at Veterans Memorial Academy. Mrs. Leal ended up at Fred Booth as principal. My guess, and yes I have no proof of this one point, but politics must have come into play. This was with the Bob T. and Oscar De Fuente board. Once again, sorry to all those who must endure what my family had to due to Mrs. Leal’s lack of leadership qualities.

As a former MJMS parent, I will be the first one to acknowledge Mrs Janie Garcia’s influence on my son’s educational progress. She tutored my son and never gave up on him. Also, consider that Mrs. Garcia’s classes had the best scores in the reading department. However, when my son entered 7th grade Mrs Clark believed taking AR tests trumped teaching. My son’s progress regressed. If you would like to validate my statement, I invite you to go to the TEA website and compare 6th & 7th grade reading scores. You know what they say; stats don’t lie.

While you are checking out the scores on the TEA website, take a minute to check out the difference between the 6th and 7th grade STAAR tests. The level of difficulty on the 7th grade test is very apparent. Do your research completely before you speak.
Yes, it is true that some students are not able to handle the rigor that is required in my class, but I continue to have high expectations for all of the students that enter the door to my classroom.
As far as the walk-throughs are concerned, you misunderstood, my concern was not the walk-through, my concern was the attempt at intimidation. Walk-through any time you want, but there better be evidence that all teachers at all campuses are being scrutinized.

The fact is, Miller Jordan is still in the same problem it was in when the previous principal was there. Last year a small group of teachers chose to speak up and not stand idly by while their rights and the rights of their students were being threatened. Part of the blame goes to a certain school board member who was against reassigning Martinez, because she used to be her elementary school principal. Come On!! She was blinded by her childhood memories, and totally dismissed the evidence presented before her. In retaliation the “fab four” ignored the pleadings of the other three members, and decided to show these teachers a lesson by searching for another administrator that would prove to be worse than her predecessor. “You give them Hell Mrs. Leal!” is what she was told after her reassignment to Miller Jordan. The huge paper trail this current principal has left proves she has done just that and more. Yes, I agree it’s time to put the children first, but you have to realize that there has to be good leadership in place in order for this to happen. A good leader is someone who chooses to create a good working environment, and wants to treat all teachers equally. The fact is that these teachers are being persecuted for speaking up for their rights. When will there be justice for them? The majority of these teachers have been with the district for many years with impeccable records, so why would they suddenly flip and become trouble makers? (That is what’s being implied) There are a few teachers who left Miller Jordan voluntarily (Mrs. Janie Garcia included), because they could no longer bear working under such hostile conditions, but they have not given up in their fight for justice. The pleas of these teachers are now being ignored by the board, because they will have to yet again, make another principal change to correct their own wrong doing; If the board had handled this effectively the first time, Miller Jordan would not be in the mess it is in now. I am for justice, and believe that the wrong these teachers were done needs to be realized once and for all!! Help Miller Jordan for the sake of the children, by giving it an administrator it deserves.

Sounds like the teachers and staff (not all) had it made in the shade (and weren’t producing – worst of the 3 middle schools BY FAR) before Martinez and Leal came around. Once they came around, vacation ended, honeymoon was over, and the Admins told teachers and staff they had to actually work, all the whining and complaining started (gradually leading to this).

This principal is the one who has left a trail of destruction all the way from Rangerville to Fred Booth, and now Miller Jordan, and that is a FACT (It’s all in her file). She established this sort of behavior long before she arrived at Miller Jordan, whereas most of these teachers have been with the district for 20+ years, with nothing but good scores & reviews….How do you explain that? These teachers are being targeted bottom line!!! (shame on you for advocating abuse in the workplace) As far as favoritism is concerned, these teachers don’t need to rely on favoritism, to get their jobs done. Being a former student of mjms, I’ve seen many teachers who had 20+ years, and they were just there for a paycheck, so you can brag about others accomplishments, Mrs. Leal has many herself. I am a student at The University of Texas at Austin and to say ” everyone that works in the education field listen up just do your damn job,” is really ignorant of how much it takes to run a school, and even a classroom. I see that the title of your comment is Teach for America, however one of the biggest criticisms of TFA is that they only concentrate on training the member on teaching, that it TFA completely undermines the importance of social constructs of a classroom, i.e. classroom management, classroom discipline, and day-to-day functions, one can quickly find our that learning to be an effective teacher does not happen over a summer training, and it surely does not happen over a year, it takes time, and I think the biggest problem that the teachers at MJMS are trying to say is give them consistency so they can develop into successful teachers.

While they are also important to the everyday running of our school they fortunately have not undergone the scrutiny that many of the teachers on campus have had to deal with. I would also like to point out that the instigator of this letter is a teacher who has benefited greatly from having Mrs. Leal as our principal and is more concerned with having an unexpected walkthrough from main office than with loosing our principal.

      WIRA? – good insight.

MJMS has come a long way I guess. They were in sandals and recliners when Rigo was there. Didn’t want the replacement principal. Now want this one. Sounds like something you might see at Fiesta Texas. Up and down and around we go. They still have a way to go. Until then, enjoy the ride.

I suppose it is I whom you refer to as the “instigator” of this letter. Make yourself known to me and the world. Don’t be ashamed to come out into the open and tell it like it is. Maybe you can enlighten me as to how I have “benefited greatly from having Mrs. Leal as our principal once you have unmasked yourself. The people who are unhappy at Miller are people like you (I assume, because you seem to be unhappy), people who were also unhappy with our last principal. These last two leaders are just that, leaders. They were the only ones capable of taking on the venom that has been spewing from this address. How can anybody be against a good old fashioned clean up. No more teachers who get paid to tutor when really all they do is watch cheerleaders and make posters. Don’t point fingers, instead, let’s talk in person.

It all showed last night that the vast majority of Miller Jordan teachers are classy cant say the same for the teachers that do not work there anymore. I guess they wanna come back.

So all 30 teachers are conspiring to reach their goal of keeping a principal longer than 5 minutes???!?? How dare they!!!!! It makes me suspicious why Cantu responded the way he did “it needs to be kept a rumor” doesn’t that mean that it’s true but he would rather people think it’s not???? How weird!!!! I’m siding with the teachers on this one! Leaver Miller Jordan alone!!!! This Janie Garcia doesn’t even work there anymore!!!!

I like to stay out of the drama, but let’s get it straight. Teresa Servellon did not conduct the meeting where we were given a survey. Dr. Cantu, interim superintendent, headed the meeting, explained the survey, and asked us to be honest. The survey was not offensive, but rather direct. Also, walkthrus have been conducted throughout the year by Sevellon. There must be a record. So let’s keep it real and if the truth is on your side lies aren’t necessary. It’s time to focus on students, leave our personal agendas behind, and highlight our district.

I was at tonight’s meeting and couldn’t agree more with Mrs. Janie Garcia. I am a fairly new teacher on and she made some pretty valid points. I think it’s time for a change!
