The Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association held its fourth annual run, walk and Zumbathon Saturday at the Heavin Resaca Trail in San Benito.

The Fourth Annual Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association (RGVDA) “Walk-Run-Zumba” was held Saturday in what organizer Ray Saldaña Jr. described as a success.

“It was great,” Saldaña said Tuesday about the festivities. “I think what is happening is that people are becoming more aware of this disease, epidemic in the Rio Grande Valley right now. It’s starting to pick up speed to where people are glad that we’re able to throw these functions to bring awareness to a concern that is going on right here in the Rio Grande Valley.”

A BIG THANK YOU TO REY SALDANA FOR TAKING THE LEAD ON THIS ONCE AGAIN.

  1. Just two observations: The grapevine is saying that this fundraiser became a political forum for an aspiring board member or two after he was seen as being one of the cooks. The gathering also may have included district personnel or administrators. Is this is all true isn’t this a possible conflict of interest by some of the individuals who participated or allowed this to happen? Again partisan politics being disguised as a fundraiser for a health cause that is very important in this country. I would love for Mr. Jimenez the reporter of the story to write something to dispel the possible rumor floating around. That is if he was present. Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Second observation: A reader/writer on this forum accuses Steve Rodriguez of being arrogant. I take exception because I know his family and he was brought up better than that. I am sure the candidate of choice of the reader/writer can be accused of something similar. How about me or the reader/writer of Wake Up? Have you every been labeled as arrogant? At some point in time someone somewhere will be perceived as arrogant. Question is is he/she arrogant or proud, or self-assured. it could be a misjudgement of character. Steve says he is open to working with any incumbent or aspiring board member to improve the image, teacher working conditions and education of all children of SBCISD. That does not sound like an arrogant person. I would have loved to hear the candidate of choice of Wake up to come forward and state what he is about and what he brings to the table if he were elected. Steve has not waivered his stance. Transparency, collaborative attitude, proud member of the community. Willing to do what it takes to remove the ridiculed cloud that hangs over our wonderful city. Our students are at stake here. Our students are learning from us the adults. If we teach them to ridicule they will also do it or will be victims of it. Our students will carry the ridicule of SBCISD wherever they go. No one wants that. Yet alot of what they do is to continue to overcome this stigma by representing SBCISD. That is what Steve brings to the table. His desire his pride and a willingness to work to overcome the negativity pushing down our students, our teachers, taxpayers and other stakeholders from surrounding communities. They are laughing at us. Not with us. Every voter has a right to change their mind and vote for the candidate who wants to change SBCISD. If you do remember #39 cornerback for the Hounds, Mr. Esteban “Steve” Rodriguez. He will appreciate your vote and support.

I am happy to hear that money was raised to fight Diabetes. I will say though that I had no clue this event was taking place or took place Saturday. I run on a daily basis and would have participated if I had known about it. My dad and extended family members have diabetes. As I already stated, I am glad money was raised; however, I am left to wonder how much more money could have been raised if I or others had known (better publicity).

God bless all those that participated.
