The San Benito Lady ’Hounds returned from state powerlifting competition over the weekend with some new championship bling to add to their collection, and in doing so made school history as well as a statement to the rest of the Rio Grande Valley and Texas: Don’t mess with the best.

As a team, the San Benito girls placed second overall at the state powerlifting tournament in Corpus Christi on Friday. Individually, others shined just as bright as Lady ’Hound senior Samantha Machuca earned gold in the 105 pound weight class—her third straight state title, which coach Laura T. Gonzalez said is a first for San Benito.
