Fifty-two applicants, 12 finalists, five remaining hopefuls and three withdrawals later, the San Benito Greyhounds finally have a new head football coach and athletic director.

The San Benito CISD Board of Trustees met during a special meeting Friday afternoon and discussed in closed session the matter of filling the AD vacancy. After nearly two hours, the Board reconvened in open session and, by way of a 7-0 unanimous vote, approved the recommendation of SBCISD Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ismael Cantu to name Gomez the new head football coach and AD.

Gomez is a former head coach at 2A Lytle, where in two seasons (2012-13) the Pirates went 12-11 and secured two playoff berths before stepping aside recently to return to the Valley as an assistant at PSJA.

    @ Need to Know

so what you are saying is that Dowling wouldnt work for district because he didnt want to be told who to put on list and champion agreed to follow those instructions.

It was interim superintendent. He was just following instructions given to him. Dusty Dowling after speaking to interim for two hours told him he wouldn’t work for r San Benito.

  1. Its very apparent to us voters that Ana Cruz used everyone to get elected ( Huerta’s,Gonzalez, etc), and now she parading Medrano and Mendez around like there celebrities. We have a great idea what Ana Cruz stands for now ,and its all about herself ,and personnel attacks at the cost of our children… The question we should ask our selves is, why was Medrano and Mendez let go from their previous job? Thats the type of leaders Ana Cruz has endorsed … Ana has turned out to be one, if not the worst board members ever elected to our school board! Good luck with your celebrities because come May both will still be where they are today at home and not on the board, and for you, enjoy your last year as queen Cruz because this will be your last year GUARANTEED !!!

She must be a real threat to you in order for you to address her as queen cruz. I can honestly tell you that she’s very well liked and people believe in what she’s doing. But not everyone’s gonna like you and that’s okay. I think everyone knows what her priorty is and it’s called “Academics”.Something that has never been talked about because it seems that personal issues seem to get in the way of other board members. But I would really like to know as a voter when she paraded these two men and where? I think as a voter we all saw her during the last board meeting she had had some type of surgery on her foot. So I ask you when was she parading them around when she can’t even walk around herself. “La Gente Habla porque tienen ——-” As for the question your wanting to know about these other canidates. Very simple ask them yourself. As a voter I think I wouldn’t listen to all the hateful spewing that people continue to spew. But talk to some of these candiates and find out what they really stand for. One thing I can tell is I don’t need to listen to anyone tell me about Anna Cruz and how she’s the worst board member when I know that she is not. I’ve seen and I’ve been at these board meeting and your truly mistaken. As for her last year on the board “How do you even guarantee and say that it’s her last year when you don’t even know if she’ll run again.Your already jumping the gun there. People need to stop with the hateful comments and focus on what is really important. Hate is a very powerful word and with hate in your heart it won’t get you anywhere.

  2. @ rude rick
Its sad but i have to agree with your post. Theres a trend with our hiring of HC/AD and i don’t understand it as a Greyhound fan. First, Medrano and the previous board hired a trainer with NO HC/AD experience and payed him like a seasoned veteran-winning coach( total joke). Than the hiring of the new coach is almost the identical situation expect coach gomez has a little more varsity football experience and with less pay. I hate to say this but its the truth ;theres a consistency just look at the board members that were part of both hiring situations( let me help you MEDRANO AND LEAL). We as a community need to give credit where credit is due and these board members get it all.. Thank you guys for using your political decision making to spend our taxpayers dollars on hiring under qualified coaches with huge pay,and only in San Benito. Let me make my self clear, I’m not dogging the coaches they apply and our wonderful super and board members recommend to hire.. So all the credit goes to the board! Voters, taxpayers and Greyhound fans please go vote and vote SMART ENOUGH DAMAGE HAS BEEN CAUSED!!!!

The first pick by the Champion group was Bob Jones. Google him (Coach Bob Jones Texas) and find out more about him. The interim crossed him out and said not interested in him. If the Champion group had been allowed to do their job they would have provided a well qualified person.

    Wake up,

    So who do you recommend?

June – a person that doesn’t have her own voice; a person that does what daddy says; a person that can’t decide for herself and looks to the president for help finishing her sentences.

Julian – a person who has admitted that the president runs the show; a person that claims to be the man when it comes to athletics yet turned the ad/hc hiring process into a top ten punch line; a person willing to spend district money because he is afraid to lose votes; a person who can’t stand up and do what’s right, even for his own kids (family members) that attend the district.

    Oscar – a person who claims to care and believe in the children and community yet fails to stand up to people he claims to be against and claims to be in the wrong;

Hector – a person that goes where the wind blows; a person that lays low; a person that dodges, ducks, and dives out of the way, but never gets anything really done; a person in survival mode

In your own words, “We can go on and on…”

I urge all candidates to be honest when turning in their financial reports on April 10th. We will have a good idea of who is trying to buy this election. By the way include all those that give you cash money under the table as well, not just the big companies. ( Don’t try and cover the under the table cash as a personal loan- and stop paying the politiqueras for votes of the elderly) All of us need to vote fairly!

  3. I couldn’t help but to comment on Steve Rodriguez and Angel Mendez. After meeting Steve his extremely arrogant and self centered. We already have way to many pervious and current board members with that attitude and has led to failure. On the other hand, you have Angel Mendez promising to bring his relative ( previous district police chief Mr. Garcia) back to his post. If you look hard enough you find that Mendez work record extremely poor and that was volunteered information from his previous co-workers folks.. If we really want to make change lets really focus what joyce aguirre ( Oscar Medrano’s BFF) Padilla stands for? Nothing good.. We can go on and on but I’m confident after speaking to our great community/voters who the best candidates are and it not the ones mentioned!!! Good day all !!

      Dear Wake Up,

If you call Confidence, Straight Forwardness, Leadership, Passion, and Motivation “arrogant and self centered” then so be it…that is your personal opinion, but Steve Rodriguez is exactly what our Board of Trustees is lacking; we need more people with these qualities on the board!! I took the time to talk to him and believe me, arrogant and self-centered is not what I got. I’m telling you folks, I’ve met all the place 7 candidates except for Mendez (no where to be seen), and Steve is the man for the job!! If you you get the opportunity to talk to him, you’ll see what I’m talking about.

  4. I was raised and graduated from San Benito High. I also own a home and pay taxes here. I have had the priviledge of knowing every single one of the incumbents and aspiring candidates. I hold a Bachelor and Master’s degree and am certified by the State of Texas to teach and to be an administrator at all levels. What I read appear to be more personal feelings and attacks about the present and past candidates or officials than about the issues most affecting the SBCISD.. So which candidate is talking about getting away from the politics and deal making? Who’s ideas want to make SBCISD a better place. I ask the voters of San Benito; Are you tired of the partisan politics on the present Board. Are you tired of listening to what is being whispered or said in the community about some present incumbents and or new candidates? My vote is going to Steve Rodriguez. I asked him why her is running as an independent candidate. Here is what he is telling those that are tired, those that want something different or want to make San Benito a better place. He is assuring voters that he will be watchful of how District board members and officials spend tax money. To oversee it as a business and not someone’s personal checkbook, He want to ensure that District curriculum is more effective in helping students achieve higher. He says he is running as an independent because he will only vote on those issues that he considers are best business practices. He understands that the Board hires the superintendent to do their job, but also knows that the Board is responsible for seeing that the superintendent is following the goals and mission of the District and just as responsible to the citizens, taxpayers, parents, students and stake holders of the purple and gold family. Come on San Benito, look at the issues mosting affecting SBCISD. Place your vote for the right candidate. Esteban “Steve” Rodriguez.

  5. @ rosalinda,
Its sad when you think the taxpayers and voters of San Benito are going to fall for your lies about Oscar’s educational history. Because you continue to brag and push Oscar’s educational history, we have searched for his educational history and he has non.. Its sad at the links this person would go to push her candidate with deceitfulness and lies! And by the way, that board member of the year/master, guess who was on the board to select that, no one than Sandra Tumberlisen.. Come on folks people have caught on to your crap so stop trying to mislead our voters and taxpayers of San Benito becauseBecause you continue to brag and push Oscar’s educational history, we have searched for his educational history and he has non.. FUITY,

Regarding other candidates that are running, I had the opportunity to meet Steve Rodriguez at his store; he is one of the candidates that is running against Huerta. He made a lot of interesting points, but the ones that got my attention were getting the focus back on the children, bringing academics scores up, the need to drastically cut wasteful spending, and the main thing of all is that he is running as an independent. I liked his passion…..He’s got my VOTE!!!

Re-Elect Oscar Medrano to the SBCISD School Board. I am strongly campaigning for Oscar Medrano because of the following:

Graduate of Texas State University; 1996 Recipient of the HCA Honor “Caregiver Award”; 2011 TCTA School Board Member of the Year Award; First School Board Member from SB to earn the distinguished title “Master Trustee” designation; TASB Legislative Advisory Council(2005); SBCISD Region I Delegate, President of Resaca Fest 2008-2009; President of United Way NCC (2005-2008); President of SB Quarterback Club (2005-2007). Current and past memberships in Kiwanis, American Heart Association, Relay for Life, Autism Awareness, March of Dimes, etc.

More attributes to follow at a later post.

Ms. Garcia, what degree does Mr. Medrano hold? Certificates don’t earn you degrees. He’s a graduate of Texas State University? What year? What degree? I’m debating who to vote for and currently I am not convinced by Mr. Medrano. You would think that he would have some education considering he currently sits on the board, and in my opinion, education is of heightened focus. I’ve also heard his involvement with the Quarterback Club, and it isn’t a positive one. Is this the one he was kicked out of? Many community members help all those organizations, but does not necessarily make them “members”.

@ DelaSera, you must be very young to be able to say that “no board in history of SBCISD ever wasted funds on 2 supers and wasted on investigating falsehoods” Let’s take this back to when Mr. Rodriguez was super, he was fired then came back and filed a law suit against SBCISD. Now lets move on to Joe D Gonzalez who was also bought out of his contract. Once Mr. Joe D Gonzalez was bought out Mr. Limon was assigned Interm Super and was getting paid as interm super; in addition, also getting paid to be human resourse director which makes it two salaries at once for Mr. Limon. So please don’t comment that NO BOARD IN HISTORY because things have been going on since way back when. Mr. T, Medrano, and De La Fuente did so many things that were kept hush hush due to them being majority on the board at the time. Now the tables have turned. What we all must keep in mind is that we need to focus on what’s important to OUR CHILDREN and most importantly what’s important to OUR TEACHERS and no one else..

ONCE AGAIN, WE NEED TO KEEP IN MIND THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CHILDREN AND OUR WONDERFUL TEACHERS….
          May can’t come soon enough!

@ Bad dog, I clearly understand that you didn’t mention Medrano’s name within the comment; however, I am advising you that Medrano too has been taking advantage of school funds… I mentioned the band booster but I stand corrected it was the quarterback club.

Being a citizen of San Benito and reading all these blogs I was curious as to who Mr. Lopez was so I made it a point to meet the man and I must say he is a very smart and well education individual. I also had the chance to meet some of the other individuals who are running against Mr. Huerta and Mr. Leal and I must say they had nothing good to say about Medrano and his team behind him. How is it that Mr. T can tell someone who can run for school board and who can’t? Why is it that Mr. T made comments regarding finances when running for school board and made it very clear to every one who runs for school board needs to have atleast 8-10,000 and if they don’t have the funds they need to get out? Who is he to make those decisions for the ones who want to run?

I was a little confused in the beginning as to who I would be voting for but after I spoke to these individuals I know exactly who my vote will be for and the rest of my families vote.

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL THE CANDIDATES!

Coach Gantt had flame throwers in his eyes. Where did it get him? This board paid him over 40K to leave than they paid 10k to find a coach and they weren’t willing to pay 100k for a quality coach. Gomez will make about 85K. They paid total 50K, but wouldn’t pay the extra 15K. Just don’t understand this board! Julian would have been better off keeping Gantt instead of pushing to get rid of him.

Isn’t there a saying out there that it’s better to be silent and thought of as a fool than take school board action and remove all doubt? Ok maybe it’s said differently. Either way, the handling of the AD/Head Football application process and ultimate hiring only serve to highlight this board’s inability to make tough decisions. It probably is a bit fitting that for all its dysfunction, infighting, and lack of leadership this board would vote UNANIMOUSLY on one of their dumbest and most illogical of decisions, the hiring of a coach BY DEFAULT.

There is no question that this board wanted to save face by “going with the process” they had unwisely put in place to begin with when they approved spending $10,000 to hire a consultant to help manage the search and application process. Even if one wanted to trust in the consultant approach, the announcement of Champion’s 5 finalists pretty much killed that thought when it included 3 completely undeserving and unworthy applicants, including their default pick, the one with “fire in his eyes”.

Probably more absurd was the board allowing an active coach to participate in the interview and recommendation process. By all accounts, this was the Interim Sup’s brainchild as he put the interview and recommendation “committee” together. Still, board members were made aware of the obvious conflict of interest in allowing a current coach on staff to participate in a committee tasked with hiring his own boss. They were also made aware of concerns being raised by other coaches chirping about the fix being in for Cavazos (a coach coming off a 2-8 season) before Champion’s final 5 was even revealed. The inclusion of Cavazos in the final 5, an obvious head scratcher, only served to reinforce this concern. It should have also raised doubts about the integrity of the entire process overall.

Yet despite that, I foolishly was beginning to believe there was hope for this board after all when they decided to unanimously table the decision to hire an AD/Head football coach in their March 6th special meeting. I attended that long meeting and what I heard at the end of it was that they were tabling the decision to allow themselves more time to evaluate and review “MORE applicants”. Apparently my ears lied to me. When it was cleared up that they were not opening up the process, but were going to have the committee “re-interview” the same finalists and were still allowing the interim AD to participate in the re-interview and re-recommendation process despite having been made aware of the obvious conflict of interest in it, it had become clear that this board just simply did not “get it”.

To solidify that belief, one need only see the comment by one of the board members commenting about what the committee told the board about Gomez, “They said they saw fire in his eyes…”

The absurdity of a cliché comment like this by the committee as a selling point on Gomez gives us a little insight as to the degree of sophistication coming from the committee. The fact that a board member would cite that comment as a supporting reason to justify their decision only serves a final reminder of just how bad this board botched this decision.

We need to re-elect Oscar Medrano and Hector Leal; and hopefully Arnold Padilla and Angel Mendez will also be elected. SBCISD would not be in the state it is now if we would have re-elected Bob Tumberlinson and elected Wilma Smetter, PhD . two years ago. Medrano, Leal, and Cruz are the minority and can’t seem to get anything on the agenda that will benefit the district now and in the future. The previous interim supt. highly recommended to board to hire Celeste Sanchez as interim. The only ones that took that recommendation were Cruz, Medrano, and Leal. The other four continue to spend tax dollars and pay two superintendents. And the four majority (Fatima, Julian, June, and Yliana) continue wasting tax dollars by paying two different attnys.
Will continue calling Texas Education Agency! Like it has been said before, when the money does not come from your pocket, people just spend, spend, spend!

Rude Rick you are right on and you covered all the bases and all we can do is go to vote come election time. As for the fire in the eyes thing I think it was dollar signs he had and more so if the board members believed him. I remember 5 years ago a candidate interviewed and managed to persuade a committee and board to hire him based on his interview and not his record and lack of experience as a head coach over 2 other true head coaches. So history repeats itself. Did the board drop the ball? No only did they drop the ball but like they once said about William Hung on American Idol that he took the American Dream and sh_t on it. Well they did the same in San Benito.

the San Benito school board totally screwed up on the hiring of the greyhounds new coach…and trying to save face by saying that Gomez was the one they wanted cause of the “fire in his eyes”…is that a load of crap or what? they had no choice but to hire him cause he was the last one left ..out of 52 applicants with sooooooo much experience…they get a guy who was an asst . coach and hc for 2 yrs in a small 2a team…lol…and what was the use of hiring the consultant…im sure they didn’t pick Gomez to be the new coach…the entire school board screw up the hiring cause they have no idea what they are doing…thank you for making the valley laugh at San Benito because of it politics and the lack of brains from the school board…. all of you people have no business of how to hire a coach…brown was the better of the two and you pick the one with less experience…was it money issue?i don’t see how since you people are paying for 2 superintendents..money for a consultant that in sure gomez wasn’t on their list as top priority…10000 dollars down the drain…thanks to the school board…you are the worst in the valley and it shows everyday when ur in the news…so again THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR MAKING SAN BENITO A LAUGHING STOCK FOR THE HIRING OF A COACH WITH LESS EXPERIENCE THAN MOST OF THE OTHER COACHES WHO APPLIED….”fire in his eyes”….what a load of crap from whoever said that…

Mr. Rude Rick…..Last committee selected a trainer with no head coaching or AD experience and paid him a lot to not live in San Benito and commitment to our town…..the committee bypassed several good applicants……The previous Board selected a Super. with no experience and paid him more than the President…..who is wasting money……trying to make a selection for the position of AD was handled with a entity that has creditability…..but I suppose that you would rather have a band booster or cheerleader sponsor to choose an AD.

I think you guys should give Gomez a chance. He took a Lytle team that hadn’t won a game in years and turned them into a contender. He helped lead Lytle over district powerhouses. A feat that brought pride to our community. San Benito is a team that a struggling, he can turn them around. The only problem I have with Gomez, is that he left a team poised for more success. He left the team in limbo with no direction.

Best of Luck to Gomez and San Benito; however, in order for a successful program to work you must implement change. Hope SB gives Gomez the opportunity to do so. Disappointed in Brown’s withdrawl, he would’ve been a “beast” and the Greyhounds would have had one heck of a coach!
