Members of the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees are seen at Veterans Memorial Academy on Tuesday just as they make the motion to approve the resignation of athletic director/head football coach Spencer Gantt.

The search has begun for a new athletic director and head football coach for the San Benito Greyhounds following the resignation of Spencer Gantt, but questions remain as to the circumstances of the departure.

Gantt, who for five years led San Benito High School athletics and the Greyhounds varsity football squad, will part ways with the purple and gold effective Jan. 27—this after the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a separation agreement between the coach and district at a regular meeting on Tuesday.

You all seem to forget that the Gantt era could have been over and done with a few years ago but Papi Chuy and his puppeteers decided to keep him on by extending his contract, since Papi Chuy was busy tripling his school business that year through Gantt. It wasn’t until Gantt figured out that quality over cheap was better and decided to take his business to the much better, high quality business of MJ’s. What else can be said? It’s all about the benjamins!

Maybe, just maybe, we should just vote sex offenders, child abusers, thieves, adulterers, liars, murderers, addicts, etc etc into office. Maybe, just maybe, we should vote and have these people represent the school district. Maybe, just maybe, we should have them represent the children, students, the community, the city, the state, the country, the world. Maybe, just maybe, that sounds great. Maybe, just maybe, we shouldn’t find a need to question who they are, what they do, and what they represent. Maybe, just maybe, we shouldn’t make public official’s job public. Maybe, just maybe, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that when you serve the public, you live under a spotlight. Maybe, just maybe one should be held accountable for their actions and how their actions represent the public they are serving.

    Food for thought:
If one doesn’t wish to be shot at, maybe just maybe one would think twice before becoming a cop or soldier.
If one doesn’t wish to get a concussion, maybe just maybe one would think twice before becoming a football player.
If one doesn’t wish to have their actions, no matter how good or bad, questioned, maybe just maybe one would think twice before becoming a public official.

Amazing how so many people can be questioned, put down, and accused of this and that on here. But once something gets said about the board president, it gets taken off.

hey griff..as you can see about what i said about gomez…i do believe i type “i do believe they were kidding on the subject”…so why should i get over it if i knew it was a joke and some dumb ppl suggesting it …i know it would never happen…and what makes you think he will stay here for a short time and then leave…he always wanted to be head coach for the hounds for quite some time and wanted to retire as head coach here…yea i know he stated at porter and south for a while but in rivera he was let go cause there wasnt much of any talent in that school in the first place….imo…if he was hired instead of pena or at the time when gantt was hired…helms would still be a coach at this time but i guess a school board must have a problem with helms or didnt like him for a reason…who knows..

helms should have been picked over pena or gantt yrs ago but i guess the school board seems to think they know better since im sure they played it in high school and can tell an experience coach to one who was a WRs coach….

so right now all im saying if helms does not apply for the sb hc/ad…the school board is at fault for not choosing him twice….

Ok. now seriously think about this. Helms….Experience is great if you want to continue the same way doing the same thing trying to get a district championship. Mario Pena? Do you really want him back? We need something new, fresh. open it up to not just a football thing.
Come on think about it. football….football…..football….. What about basketball, baseball, track. What about the girls volleyball, basketball, track, weightlifting. You are trying to hire an A.D. not just a football coach.
Get out of this simple minded thinking of wanting what is best for one kid, instead of the whole group. Did not work out well this season.
Lets look at this differently Example…Sharyland won more district titles across the boys and girls events then any other school. which included basketball, baseball, softball, track and so on. Why it was and A.D. not a H.C.Not San Benito. It is H.C. before A.D.
We have the perfect opportunity to be the best, not just the valley, but the state. Our girls are proving that now. Why aren’t the boys….because they worry only about football….football…football….and most of the boys coaches are football first mentality. Get over it
By the way Manny Gomez did not have all the experience in the world or did he have an outstanding record, but they gave this young coach the opportunity to come back to his alma mater and do what he did best coach cardinal football. Maybe we need to bring back an ex greyhound to coach Greyhound football.
    Think people. A.D. not H.C.

For someone that is so concerned about the use of taxe payers dollars, she sure enjoys herself when she attends seminar-conferences with Oscar Mesrando on the district dime( taxe payers dollars). By the way, your 3 superior board members have been talking that they are pushing for the consulting firm to hire the head football coach! What hipacrits, when just a few mouths ago Oscar, Anna and Hector trashed the ways our taxe payer dollar and now it’s ok to because it’s their idea.. What a joke people have caught on to pathetic ways..
You sure gossip and talk a lot of nonsense..

Rick Rude: I see what your upset about with the five year Gantt put in. He under-achieved as our head coach, and as an offensive minded coach; we were very poor on that side of the football. I know that Gantt was a WR coach with LF, but with Harlingen he was their offensive coordinator. Both of those teams put up a lot of points while he was there. Coach Pena was picked over Coach Helms the first time around. I wasn’t a Pena fan, but he did have a good program while he was here. Coach Helms made Porter a winner while he was the Head coach there; very impressive if you ask me. He also made a winner out of a poor South program while he was there. His time at Rivera was a downer as he was unable to turn them around, but the one thing that was all the same with all three of his stops was they was all short stays. That was the down side of Coach Helms. If he wasn’t going to stay for very long then whats the point? Maybe 2 good seasons… then what? Right back to were we started. Its always easy to look back and say “That was stupid” after the fact. I liked Coach Gantt and Coach Finley five years ago, and like Gantt when he was picked. It didn’t workout. Lets just hope this next coach turns this program around and wants to stay here for the long term. Lets hope he can quite all the Vince Lombardi coaches we have here around town. O-yea and lastly We were never going to try to hire Gomez away from Harlingen!! LOL!! That was just a joke!! Get Over IT…

How about the district hire a consultant and pay that person a good amt of taxpayers monies to find that winning coach! The district is paying an insurance consultant over 80 thousand a year to assist the insurance dept. I am sure the four board members can recommend someone that can fit that consultant slot and find SB that winning coach! Good Luck!

    Michael Mull?

Don’t whine about Ram being placed interim over the Evans boys. If that’s the case then the next AD/HC for Greyhound football will be Elias and not you. And quit with all that kiddy Facebook stuff. Grow up son and until then and your stripes are earned, stick to fast pitch. U do more there than in football.

i seriously don’t think the school board do not know how to hire a experience coach…if the former head coach of the Dallas cowboys , jimmy Johnson, were to apply 5 yrs ago…the school board would have still hired gantt just cause he help los Fresno and harlingens football team….don’t screw it up again…helms is a good coach who knows football and has the experience and should have been the one hired instead of a coach who was a WRs coach and thats all he was….im seriously thinking harlingen pays these school board members under the table to pick the coach with the least experience…. plus i really doubt helms would apply again since the school board stab one of its own football greats in the back and not hiring him…twice…

you people should stop listening to you uncles..aunts…cousins…..dogs…cats…brother…sisters …imaginary friend on who to hire…its simple…actually sit your butts down and read their application to see what kind of experience they have as a HEAD COACH..not a WRs coach….if its a good or great application ..put it aside on the table so you can look more into it and so on and so on with the rest of the coaches who applied…but if it says something like “oh ..i was an asst to los fresnos and harlingen as a WRs coach”…well it dose not take brains to think or say “no thank you but thanks for stopping by”….see…its that simple

and for some ppl to even think we should try to hire manny gomez from harlingen must be really stupid even thou i do think they were kidding on the subject….WE ARE SAN BENITO… we do not need anyone from harlingen to coach the greyhounds so they ,cardinal fans, can say we are trying to be like them… we arent …for once do something good and smart and hire an experience coach who knows what he is doing on the fieldand if not…maybe the next NEW school boards members will….
