The San Benito Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the resignation agreement of San Benito High School head football coach and athletic director Spencer Gantt at a regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

The San Benito Greyhounds are officially looking for a new leader.

At the regular meeting of the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday night, board members approved a resignation agreement with athletic director/head football coach Spencer Gantt, thus agreeing to end Gantt’s tenure–effective Jan. 27–with the Greyhounds after five seasons.

The motion was made by board vice president Julian Huerta, seconded by president Yliana González and approved unanimously.

Details of the agreement were not disclosed; however, sources close to the district indicated that SBCISD agreed to compensate Gantt for the remainder of his contract, which expires this spring, in exchange for the coach’s immediate resignation.

Gantt could not be reached for comment late Tuesday.

González said, “We just want to thank coach Gantt for his years of service with the district, and we’re very pleased to have him part of the San Benito team for as long as he was.”

Officials have also yet to confirm an interim appointment to the AD post.

Gantt was hired in 2009 to replace Mario Peña and went 28-26 overall with three playoff appearances (2009-11) in his five years at the helm. Included in that was a District 32-5A co-championship and bi-district win over Edinburg High in ’11 as the ’Hounds finished 9-3.

Unfortunately, San Benito missed the postseason the last two seasons in the meat grinder District 31-5A, going 6-4 in 2012 and just missing the playoffs before a disappointing 3-7 finish this past season.

In August, just as the season was to begin, board members took no action on an agenda item to extend Gantt’s contract, and the coach’s status beyond 2013 was uncertain. While the ’Hounds remained competitive in just about every ballgame, they could not overcome a roster which lacked varsity experience and had trouble at times moving the football.

Gantt was brought on board after a successful stint as Harlingen High’s offensive coordinator in 2008. That year, the Cardinals went 10-3 with a third round playoff appearance thanks in part to Gantt’s high-octane offense which solidified his status as a hot coaching prospect. Prior to that, Gantt coached wide receivers under Scott Ford at Los Fresnos from 2006-07 during its successful string of third-round playoff appearances.

To wear school colors especially cuz odds r he was getting paid by the district but none the less the point is he’s not from sb so why should he wear p&g , so can u imagine his pride of sb as a head coach….wait it would be just like the crime rate when RoboCop is on duty ….. Non existent !!!

And yes you could care less. Your point is pointless. Tell HUFFy puffy to put on Cardinal colors and go coach for the Hawks or McHi colors and go coach for McAllen Memorial. It’s called pride. But Gantt didn’t have that in SB. Gantt brought HUFF in. No pride from Gantt. No pride from HUFF.

HUFF has a spectacular resume going there. TAMUK Defensive Coordinator, then Greyhound Special Teams, whats next? Brownsville 1st grade flag football get back coach? South south south. Down down down.

But you keep on caring less. You’re doing a great job!

Standout football player Jaedon Taylor was denied to participate in athletics during the 2014-15 season (his senior year) for Harlingen High School on Tuesday at a District 32-5A Executive Committee meeting by a 7-0 decision. Taylor and his family moved from the Harlingen South school zone to a Harlingen High zone in early December. The principals for the other seven schools in the district (the six Brownsville schools and Los Fresnos) agreed unanimously that Taylor’s move was made for athletic purposes, which is against UIL rules. The Taylors will appeal the decision at the February DEC meeting. Gee, I can think of a couple of school districts that are known to do this…….and School Boards that choose to ignore it and look the other way….hmm, this is interesting! Leave Harlingen in Harlingen!

My son, bless his heart, didn’t feel loved or respected by Coach Gantt. He felt disrespected, and many of his teammates felt belittled by Coach Gantt including Coach Evans. San Benito athletes do have talent and can accomplish great heights whether the coach is from the valley or not. It starts with respect. This past season was horrible, no motivation what’s so ever ,not even from the younger coaches. Good luck to Gantt and the other SB young buck applying in Sharyland.

The board members should stand up and execute there responsibility to hire the best coach that has applied. No more hiring of valley coaches. Hire one from upstate just like McAllen Bulldogs did. They went and got an assistant from the Allen Eagles. Coach Brewer has got state championship in his blood and has brought it down to McAllen. That attitude has trickled down to the players and produced winners and a playoff berth in his first year. I applaud McAllen for going out of the valley to hire a coach. SB board members should follow the same footsteps as McAllen did. Don’t be lame ducks and hire a recycled coach from the valley. They are already burned with other school districts. As for Coach Helms, he would be a good coach because he brings knowledge from the collegete level. He’s got the knowledge to lead a group of kids like SB has and make them winners. This is what we want. If not Helms then go out of the valley. Look at Santa Maria, they got a coach from California and took them to the playoffs in his first year. That makes Santa Maria look good. Lets see if the San Benito’s school will look good just like Santa Maria. Hail to Santa Maria.

I feel so sorry for San Benito. Somebody posting about Manny leaving to San Benito. I don’t think he will be in Harlingen all his career, but I guarantee you he won’t go to San Benito. It’s called tradition. It’s called pride. It’s called loyalty. Something the SBCISD football program and board members don’t have. I applaud you Manny for the dedication you have to the Cardinals. My son loves playing for you. The attitude and discipline you coach are reflected daily in his life. That is something I will be forever grateful for. As good as he is in athletics, instilling what it takes to be successful in school and in life is flat out awesome. Everybody points the finger in San Benito. Nobody stands up and takes responsibility. The Super and Board should be in charge of hiring. That is what they get paid and elected to do. Do your job. Don’t delegate down responsibilities to a committee for the sake of if something bad goes wrong blame can fall on the committee instead of yourselves. All the behind the scenes meetings are unprofessional as well. I read last night on RGVsports that some Partida coach is to be appointed interim. The person that posted the info said he heard it from a very reliable source, unhappy, but very reliable source. Well my nephew that plays for the Greyhounds, says it’s a circus in San Benito. That the school board members all have a bad reputation and that the coaches run around all day talking this and that hoping they’ll have a job in the weeks to come and that he even sees hostility among the coaches out of fear for who will be next in line. If a player can see it, don’t you think parents and those in the community and political persons see it as well. San Benito definitely had become a circus. His mother, my sister, says that board members, and I quote, “Julian and Oscar are have been reportedly walking around with ‘tee-pees’ and salivating at the mouth during this process as people call them and look to them for the inside scoop. It’s all about themselves. It’s all about looking good. It’s all about feeling important.” I cracked up. But then again, who wouldn’t. That’s the whole point of a circus isn’t it? To laugh?

From top to bottom and bottom to top, whichever side you play, I wouldn’t rely on any of the board members. Until they start doing things the right way. Come together. Work together as one. Be professional. Stop the buzz. Stop the whispers. Stop the shady. Until then, San Benito CISD will always be a circus. Students, parents, if you’re fed up. Move to Harlingen. We take care of out students. We instill knowledge and hard work. We instill morals. We do things the right way. Just a thought, there is a reason San Benito is always in the paper, in the news. Which goes reported more – good news or bad news?

Right on Rick Rude, S.R. Garcia and Michelle Vasquez you’re exactly right. Experience has and always counts, this is why an experienced coach be it Jim Helms or Joe Solis or somebody else who has coached several years has seen the lows and highs in a program and year in and year out still produce a winning track record as they have shown consistency. Gomez over Helms, really? Not now or in any other lifetime, you don’t have a clue or for that matter know the history or records. Age matters to a certain point, remember it’s not their body we want it’s their wisdom and valuable experience that makes them winners. I do agree on the other hand that Gomez does the best he can for his school even if it means recruiting other players from all of his city, but as for coaching experience he’s never gotten out of the Regional round. He’s a good coach not a great coach. This job has to be advertised state wide and out of state if possible as it pays great and San Benito is still only one school and the possibilities are endless.

If I remember correctly I read that last time there were 40 applicants. A committee of two citizens appointed by each board member (14) plus the high school principal and several other administrators narrowed the list down to 10 for interviews. Gantt, Helms, Solis were the three finalists. Tumberlinson and De La Fuente plus another board member voted for Helms and the others voted for Gantt. If a committee is to be created….the only requirement should be is that the majority of those serving on that committee should have worn the purple and gold on a Friday night. The rest of us Saturday Morning Head Coaches or Saturday Morning Quarterbacks have no business on that committee.

I think they should form a committee of administrators, fans, and pertinent people to advertise and interview prospective coaches. Criteria should be formulated to asses the right candidate based on his program, motivational skills, and his commitment to have the players complete their education. Year after year we see players from the upper valley schools receiving scholarships to continue playing and receiving higher education. San Benito has many good football, basketball, track, baseball, and softball players that just need a good coach to believe in them and motivate them. Obviously we are not doing something right. Harlingen does not change coaches constantly as they are proven winners year after year. Let’s get this one right. FORM THE COMMITTEE

For the love of God, no more committees! The more people involved, the more bonehead ideas entertained. Stop taking away the decisions we pay administrators to make from their responsibility. This should be a matter between the superintendent, high school principal and board members. Period.

Harlingen has a home town boy that started off as a coordinator that the kids know who is energetic and knowledgable. Before him it was creators , the Boyd’s from up north and the almighty longhogfer so they went through a period of time of changing head coaches for five or six years each before settling on a hometown boy that represents the red and black that has been through the same system, schools, and program that the current kids r going through. The majority of the staff wore the same colors that the kids now wear, Harlingen breeds Harlingen and it’s time for San Benito to start breeding San Benito and get rid of the CLAN that is there now degrading OUR kids and surround them with coaches who wore PURPLE &GOLD and who care about the kids that are walking the halls that want to play football for a program that represents the community to the best and of highest expectations. San Benito is ready for the GOLD LIGHTNING offense and the PURPLE THUNDER defense because PRIDE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE !!!

Why are some people so against hiring Jim Helms? The man has a proven track record of rebuilding programs, revitalizing offenses, implementing a no-nonsense mentality, and serves as a good role model for kids. Not only that but he’s also from San Benito and was a major part of the only Greyhound team that had a shot at winning a state title, he wants to work here and doesn’t play politics. So what if he’s in his retirement years? The guy’s healthier than Mario Pena was when he split! He can give us a good five or six years, which is about what Mario Pena and Spencer Gantt gave us. Hire a good offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator and allow them to learn under Jim Helms so he’ll leave the program in good hands when he wants to retire. Please don’t let this be YET ANOTHER blown opportunity to hire this great man. It may be our last chance.

But in this case, right now, I say hiring him wouldn’t be a good thing. I won’t necessarily call it a mistake, but I see him being just as productive as Gantt was. Draw your own conclusions.

Yes, to some he is considered old but, most of your successful coaches are. Look at this man’s track record…coached on four national championship teams… coached something like around 60/65 former NFL football players…he was a coaches coach…and the man is still active. Personally, I think there is something about playing for a man of his caliber. It kinda brings out the best in the kids. You can still see him jogging around South Padre Island.

The kids of this generation don’t give two cents about caliber. The kids of this generation probably don’t know what that word means. I understand what you’re saying but thats like picking MJ over Lebron in a one on one right now. It’s not a disrespect thing. It’s a what’s best for right now thing. Heads up – Manny Gomez or Jim Helms. You’d be a fool to pick Helms over Gomez. Helms has a better track record. But you would be a fool to pick Helms over Gomez.

Since the school loves spending money and doesn’t mind dishing out Limon’s salary, how about this…

When Limon’s contract is up, offer his salary and the AD/HC job to Manny Gomez. Pay him whatever his salary is at HHS until then. Now that guy is an old school new school BAMF that knows how to win!

Maybe Gomez will bring half of his Harlingen team with him and make history for San Benito like other valley AD’s do to win.
