Gale Helser of the San Benito Elks Lodge #1661 and Pete Bustamante, a licensed clinical social worker and healthcare and homeless veterans coordinator with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, are seen Thursday at the lodge.

The San Benito Elks Lodge #1661 purchased a number of household necessities for donation to two homeless military veterans thanks to a $2,000 grant.

“We are eligible to apply for a grant each year,” explained Gale Helser, Chairman of the Freedom Grant, of the Elks. “Last year we were successful in receiving it. They only award so many in the United States. Last year we received one and this year we received one.”

Helser explained that the intent of the grant money is to help assist veterans in the area.
