HoundsOnce they got going, the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons were hard to stop.

The 32-5A co-champions trailed briefly in all three sets but prevailed in straight sets 25-14, 25-17 and 25-19 over San Benito in their Class 5A bi-district match on Tuesday night.

Los Fresnos (34-8) will now face the winner of Del Rio and Edinburg North next week in the Area round.

After San Benito started well to take an early lead, Los Fresnos raced out to a 10-5 lead in the first set behind several service points from Sarah Truman. Dominating play at the net got the Falcons hot streak going. Although three service points by the Lady ’Hounds’ Dina Trevino closed to 20-13, Los Fresnos regrouped and closed things out, 25-14.

Solid play all around helped the Lady ’Hounds start 5-0 in set 2 with Dorothy Millan at the serve. But back came Los Fresnos as the Lady Falcons stopped the run and freshman Jackie Kingsbury’s kill closed it to 6-3. They took a 10-9 lead on a kill from Truman and went on a 15-8 run to win the second set, 25-17.

San Benito took a 6-3 edge in set 3 on an ace from Trevino and later Giselle Schoenmakers’ point made it 8-7 before Los Fresnos tied it up at 8. Later, Millan’s ace tied up the set at 14 and another ace made it 16-14 before four straight Falcon points stopped the bleeding and gave the home team back the lead it would never relinquish.
