San Benito and the Rio Grande Valley have experienced heavy amounts of rain over the past weeks, but it has had little impact on the drought currently affecting the entire region.
“This local rain is good for the sugarcane,” said Sonia Lambert of the Cameron County Irrigation District #2. “All the other crops have pretty much been picked, except for some cotton, which this rain is not good for. They should have already picked it, but they couldn’t get in because of the rains. Local rain only settles the dust for the time being. Our situation is lack of water in our reservoirs. That’s what needs to be replenished for this area to continue as we normally have.”
