A well-respected judge and beloved member of the San Benito community died Monday morning.

Family members of former Justice of the Peace Oscar De La Fuente Sr. confirmed August 5 that he had succumbed to what they believe were heart complications earlier that day. He was 84.

Throughout his life, De La Fuente established a name for himself as a Korean War veteran, a local business owner, a member of the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees and as a justice, not to mention being honored as the namesake of a local elementary school.

Our condolences to Ana and her family. I considered Oscar a good friend. When I visited San Benito, I would always stop and visit with my compadre Robert de la Fuente at the gas station. More often than not, Oscar would be there and we would talk about San Benito past vs present. He was a well read individual. He represented dignity and respect. One word he always omitted from his vocabulary was the word “I”. In other words, he would never boast about his accomplishments. To say I will miss Oscar is a vast understatement.

May Mr. Oscar de la Fuente Sr. rest in peace; and may his family find comfort knowing that the community of San Benito is thankful for having him served his nation and his community. Thank-you Mr./Mrs. De la Fuente for being our pride. Yes, you all helped out by employing the youth at your store, were good mentors, and a generous giving family.

My thoughts and prayers to my Aunt Ana, Little Oscar, Bea, and rest of family. My Uncle Oscar was such a kind hearted man. He had a beautiful smile that when you saw him and he smiled it seemed like only you and him existed in the world. I will never ever forget that when my sons Jonathan and Matthew were growing up and we’d happen to stop by Pop’s if Uncle Oscar was there he’d call the boys and he would give them a dollar..whatever he had. He loved children and you could see the twinkle in his eye as he was so amazed at how the kids grew up so fast from the last time he saw them. Uncle Oscar we love you and we will miss you greatly. Say hi to all our family Chucky, Tia Juanita, Tia Maria, Tio Mage, and so forth. You are surely in God’s Presence Uncle Oscar. Until we meet again. Love, Melva Tamez, Jonathan Tamez, and Matthew Tamez..
