SAN BENITO—Guadalupe Garza, 86, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Matilde G. Garza; sons, Guadalupe Ricardo Gonzales and Jose Garza.
He is survived by his daughters; Martha G. (Samuel Jr.) Reyes of Phoenix, AZ; Herminia G. (Arnold) De Los Santos of San Benito, TX; Dora Garza of Harlingen, TX; Lucy Garza of Rio Hondo, TX; and Irma (Adalberto) Garcia of San Benito, TX; sons, Guadalupe (Elena) Garza, Jr.; and Juan (Vicky) Garza, both from San Benito, TX; 30+ grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was employed with the Texas Highway Department for 41 years and enjoyed every day while he was there.
He served in the U.S. Navel Service during World War II serving as Seaman Second Class and was entered into service on July 12, 1945 on the naval ship USS Denver. After his tour of duty he was honorably discharged from the naval service on June 10, 1946 from Camp Wallace, Texas.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m., with recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. in the Funeraria Del Angel Chapel. Mass was held on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, San Benito, Texas. Interment was followed at San Benito City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Guadalupe Garza III, Richard Garza, Roel Garza, Arnold De Los Santos, Jr.; Jonathan Hernandez, Felix Garza, and Hilario B. Garcia.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Juan Garza, Guadalupe Garza, Jr.; Samuel B. Reyes III, Michael David Reyes, Eric Daniel Reyes, Ruben Cortez, Jr.; Guadalupe Ricardo Gonzales, Jr.; and Jose Luis Gonzales.
Military honors were held on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at San Benito City Cemetery and were provided by American Legion Post 43.
