RIO HONDO – The Rio Hondo Pony League has nearly completed what league president and Rio Hondo Mayor Gus Olivares described as an exciting season rich with participation.

“We just had our closing ceremonies for baseball and softball,” Olivares said Tuesday. “We had a very exciting season, a great turnout. At this time we only have one team from the softball side participating in the All-Stars and a couple on the baseball side.”

Olivares said players from several squads, according to the age division, team up to compete against other outfits from around the state. The goal? To reach the Pony World Series.

Still, it’s participation that Olivares said remains the key to the league’s success. Olivares said that the league saw approximately 210 kids register for softball and baseball teams, 120 of whom signed up for baseball.

“We’ve been consistent for the past couple of years,” Olivares said of the league’s registration turnout. “We’ve been averaging about the same, between 200 and 220, but now since we added football and cheer a lot of people are participating in those sports also. Right now, towards the end of the season, some of those kids want to jump to the football side, but it’s still early on.”
