Police in San Benito recently arrested a local man for hitting his mother with a telephone.
Detective Rogelio Banda, Jr. of the San Benito Police Department said officers responded to the 400 block of Commerce Street at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, when a 41-year-old woman alleged that her 22-year-old son, identified as Joe Anthony Gonzalez, assaulted her with the home telephone and prevented her from calling the authorities.
“Apparently the mother confronted Mr. Gonzalez regarding a missing electronic device from her house,” Banda said in reference to a missing tablet. “When she confronted him he became upset, and they had some sort of dispute. She tried to call the police department, but at that point Mr. Gonzalez yanked the phone from her, disconnected the line and during the process assaulted her by hitting her in the face with the phone. This prompted other family members to intervene, trying to defend the subject’s mother.”
