San Benito resident Jose Luis Vega pleaded guilty Tuesday to a July 2010 double murder in Harlingen.

Judge Benjamin Euresti of the 107th state District Court sentenced Vega to 40 years.

Edgar Villanueva and Augustin Gonzalez Jr. were cruising a Harlingen street on a Saturday night when Vega used his vehicle to run them off the road. Vega had known that his cousin, Villanueva, was looking for him concerning money Vega owed him. After Villanueva and Gonzalez exited the vehicle, Vega used a high-profile rifle to kill them.

“The fact that Vega killed these two men while his own pregnant wife and two small children were in the car demonstrates the extreme brutality of these murders,” District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said. “Vega has not only victimized the families of those he killed, but his own family who were witness to the killings.”
