Ten San Benito ballplayers earn All-District honors

Special to the NEWS

Hound logoDespite not finishing the season the way they’d have liked, there was some good news for the San Benito Greyhounds baseball team this week.

A total of 10 players were named to the District 31-5A all-district team, which was selected by each of the district’s coaches.

Leading the way was freshman J.R. Gaitan, who was named the 31-5A Newcomer of the Year. Gaitan, who played shortstop and pitcher, had a .414 batting average including five doubles, two triples and nine stolen bases.

Senior catcher Adan Guzman was named to the first team. Guzman, one of the leaders on the club as a captain and a four-year starter, hit .419 with five doubles, a homerun and 28 RBIs.

“He was our leader and he’ll truly be missed,” Greyhound skipper Ram Partida said of Guzman.
